In today’s digital media era, the prevalence of fake news and misinformation threatens the credibility of the fourth pillar of democracy. Fake news represents a new form of yellow journalism, involving the spread of propaganda and false narratives. A prime example of such yellow journalism is the handle ‘Sadaf Afreen’ on X. Although Sadaf claims to be a journalist, her handle is known for continuously disseminating misleading information particularly targeting the Hindu community and to exacerbate social division. Let us look at some fake news spread by Sadaf Afreen so far.

1. The news of a Muslim businessman being beaten up for not chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in a train is false

On January 15, 2023, Sadaf Afreen shared a Tweet and claimed that between the stations of Hapur and Moradabad, 8-10 individuals boarded the Padmavat Express and manhandled a man named Asim Hussain to a distressing ordeal. According to her, the attackers allegedly demanded that he chant slogans hailing ‘Jai Shri Ram’. Shockingly, when Asim Hussain refused to comply, the situation escalated. He was reportedly forced to remove his clothes, and a belt was used to inflict physical harm on his back. The attackers further aggravated the assault by gripping his beard and pulling on it, she said.

Fact: It was found that Asim Hussain had molested a woman on the train, due to which he was beaten up by people. There was no incident of raising slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ on the train.

2. The claim of Ganga Vilas Cruise being stranded in Chhapra, Bihar is false

Sadaf Afreen posted a tweet claiming that the recently launched PM #गंगाविलासक्रूज faced a setback during its maiden voyage at Chhapra in Bihar. The cruise, supposedly stuck just three days into its planned 51-day voyage, prompted Afreen to question whether sufficient consideration was given to the river’s depth when planning the route.

Fact: It was found that the Ganga Vilas cruise was not stucked in Bihar and reached every destination as per the schedule.

3. Old video of priest being beaten with a cricket bat viral with misleading claim

Sadaf Afreen shared a video of a priest getting thrashed with a bat and wrote, “a Pandit who came to do pooja in the house did wrong on the pretext of correcting Rahu Ketu (Horoscope) of the girl. The girl told the family members about the misconduct. So, in a reaction to that, the people of the house spoiled the Pandit’s Rahu Ketu (Horoscope) by beating him with a bat.”

Fact: The four youths had thrashed the priest for not allowing them to keep cricket equipment inside the temple. The claim that the priest molested a girl is completely false.

4. Congress MLA Vijayalakshmi Sadho was not strangled by policemen in Madhya Pradesh

adaf Afreen shared a picture with a claim that Congress MLA Vijaylaxmi Sadho had been thrown into a car by police while protesting for a medical college in Madhya Pradesh. Afreen further accused the police of holding Sadho by the neck, calling the behavior “unfortunate” and condemning those in power who “talk about women’s respect day and night.

Fact: The police did not hold Vijayalakshmi Sadhu by the throat. On examining the pictures from another angle, it was found that Vijayalakshmi herself had held her throat with her hands.

5. The Supreme Court has not stopped the promotion of the judge who convicted Rahul Gandhi

Sadaf Afreen claimed that “Supreme Court has banned the promotion of 68 judges of Gujarat! The list of these judges also includes the name of Judge Harish Verma, who sentenced Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case!”

Fact: There was no ban on the promotion of the judge who sentenced Rahul Gandhi. Supreme Court judge M.R. Shah stated in his order that the judges who convicted Rahul Gandhi would not be covered under the stay. The media has incorrectly reported the stay.

6. No sex racket going on in BJP’s office in Jaunpur

Sadaf Afreen claimed in a tweet that “Prostitution was going on in the same hotel where BJP’s office is located in Jaunpur, UP! 10 people including 6 women arrested in a raid by the city magistrate! Are you seeing what is going on in the name of patriotism? If it was the office of an opposition party, would the lapdog media have been breaking the stake?”

Fact: There was a BJP office on the first floor of the building, which had been closed for several months. In the same complex, on the ground floor, there was a hotel where the sex racket was operating.

7. Alamgir Mosque was built by Hindu Pandit to honour Aurangzeb is a baseless claim

Sharing a tweet, Sadaf Afreen wrote, Alamgir Mosque was built by Pandit in honor of Aurangzeb, when he saved the honor of his daughter.

Fact: The Alamgir Mosque was previously known as the Beni Madhav Temple. Akhbarats from Aurangzeb’s court, which are kept at the Rajasthan State Archives in Bikaner, contain written documentation of the demolition of the Beni Madhav Temple in 1673 by Aurangzeb. The French merchant Jean Baptiste Tavernier mentioned the Beni Madhav Temple in his travelogue, and Tulsidas also referenced the temple in the Vinaya Patrika.

8. The claim that the principal was beaten up for conducting Christian prayers in school is misleading

Sadaf Afreen claimed that the principal of a school in Maharashtra was allegedly attacked by a mob for being involved in organizing a Christian prayer in the school.

Fact: The claim of the principal being beaten up for conducting an alleged Christian prayer in the school was found to be misleading. In fact, the principal was beaten up for installing CCTV cameras in the girls toilet.

9. Claim of Hindu husband killing Muslim wife in Aligarh is misleading

Sadaf Afreen claimed that Muskan had eloped and married Deepak 4 years ago in Aligarh, now the police have found her dead body. The girl’s father Naeem says, “When Muskan ran away for the first time, she was a minor, we went to court and brought her back, but one day she again eloped with Deepak and got married”. The family says- Deepak used to beat my daughter a lot!

Fact: The investigation revealed that Muskan had previously married Deepak, but the marriage ended. They had been separated for four years. For the past year, Muskan had been living with Faizan. The police have arrested Faizan in connection with Muskan’s death.

10. Pappu Qureshi, who accused Bittu Bajrangi in Nuh violence, is not a BJP worker

Sadaf wrote on Instagram, “BJP worker makes a big disclosure on Nuh violence – “Bittu Bajrangi is the main conspirator of the violence in Nuh! He had tried to incite riots in Faridabad too! We did not let him succeed there! Bittu Bajrangi had distributed swords 3 months ago to incite riots, I have all the evidence! People of Muslim and Hindu communities of Mewat always lived together! And Bittu Bajrangi is directly responsible for the murder of 6 people during the violence!” Meaning these riots did not happen, they were made to happen! Now even after such a big disclosure, will Bittu Bajrangi be arrested or not??”

Fact: Pappu Qureshi stands as a supporter of the Congress party and holds the position of a local leader within the party’s ranks in Faridabad. While it is evident that he entered into a strategic alignment with the BJP driven by opportunism, Qureshi eventually returned to the Congress fold.

11. The claim about Baba Ambedkar having the support of Muslim voters in drafting the Constitution is misleading

Sadaf Afreen shared a video clip of Azad’s statement from the event. She summarized his words as, “Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhim Army Chief, underlined the significance of Muslims in Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar’s constitution drafting process.” Afreen further remarked, “This perspective challenges those who question the involvement of the Muslim community in electing and sending Bhimrao Ambedkar to the Constituent Assembly.”

Fact Check: During our research, we found that Dr Ambedkar was indeed elected as a member from Bengal when the Constituent Assembly was formed. However, the region from which he was elected became part of Pakistan after the partition. Subsequently, the Congress supported Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s membership from the Bombay constituency. In short, when the Constitution was being drafted, Ambedkar was representing Bombay rather than Bengal in the Constituent Assembly.

12. The claim of rape of a female constable in Saryu Express is false

Sadaf Afreen shared a tweet and claimed that “A female police officer was horribly gang-raped in Saryu Express. The rapists tore the woman’s entire body, cut her cheek and her entire body was covered in blood. The female police officer was unconscious, lying under the seat in a semi-nude state. The woman has been admitted to the hospital, where her condition is said to be critical. She further claimed that now even women police are not safe in UP.”

Fact: Our investigation revealed that the female constable was not raped. Neesh, Azad and Vishambar were professional thieves who used steal in a moving train. They started forcing themselves on the female constable. When the constable resisted, they attacked her face with a sharp weapon. They hit her head against the window. Still the constable kept fighting. When they failed to control her, the female constable was brutally beaten. After this, the constable fainted. She fell on the ground. After this, the accused took off the clothes of the female constable. Meanwhile, the train reached near Mankapur railway station. Fearing getting caught, the miscreants pushed the constable under the seat and got off the train themselves.

13. Asif had put up posters in Gurugram threatening that ‘Muslim sisters and daughters will be raped

Sadaf Afreen  wrote that posters have been put up in Gurugram to vacate Muslim slums and settlements in two days! The posters read- “If you want to save your life and honour, vacate the settlement in two days”. Is this not oppression?? Is this not an act promoting hatred?? Tell me, will this bring peace in the society or will it spread unrest?? Will action be taken against those who put up the posters or will the government remain silent to please the crowd??

Fact: There was no communal angle in this case. Police said that a case was registered after the poster surfaced. The accused, Asif, was arrested for putting up the poster due to competition in the scrap business.

14. Claim that Canada has banned RSS is misleading

Sadaf Afreen shared a video claiming that Canada is going to ban RSS amid tension between India and Canada.

Fact:  Our investigation revealed that the person whose video is being shared to claim that RSS has been banned is the CEO of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) and not a representative of the Canadian government. This makes it clear that the claim of the Canadian government banning RSS is misleading.

15. This photo of children being shared amid the Israel-Palestine conflict is old

Sadaf Afreen shared a picture of Palestinian children and tweeted, “The innocent children seen in the photo were killed by the Israeli army! Was this not a crime against humanity??”

Fact: The photo shared by Sadaf Afreen was misleading. It had no connection to the recent Israel-Palestine conflict.

16. Algerian football club’s celebration video viral as Israel-Palestine war

Sadaf Afreen shared a video tweet and wrote, “This is Gaza. Israel has attacked Gaza. Is this not a terrorist attack?”

Fact: Our investigation revealed that the video was not related to the Israel-Palestine war but was a celebration video of an Algerian football club.

17. Former IPS Sanjiv Bhatt is behind the prison for misusing his power

Sadaf posted, “Former IPS Sanjeev Bhatt is in jail because of his honesty! He questioned the government, so he is in jail! He did not bow down to the government, so he is in jail! He was not afraid of big leaders, he faced them face to face, so he is in jail! But nowadays some big officers change their doors out of fear!”

Fact: Investigation revealed that Sanjiv Bhatt is in jail for misusing his power and position. In the year 2022, Bhatt was arrested by the SIT for fabricating evidence to falsely implicate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 Gujarat riots.

18. CNN video exposing fake attack on Israel is edited

Sadaf shared a video claiming that CNN exposed the fake attack on Israel.

Fact: The video was edited by adding a separate audio.

19. This video of Shivraj Singh Chauhan crying after Mohan Yadav was made the Chief Minister is misleading

Sadaf shared a video of Shivraj Singh Chouhan crying and claimed, “Shivraj Singh Chouhan worked very hard to win the election, but Mohan Yadav took away the fruits of his hard work!”

Fact:  Investigation revealed that the video of Shivraj Singh Chouhan crying after Mohan Yadav was made the Chief Minister is misleading. Actually this video is from the year 2019 when his adopted daughter Bharti died, due to which Shivraj Singh Chouhan started crying.

20. There is no communal angle in the case of beating of a Muslim youth in Kushinagar, UP

Sadaf Afreen wrote, “Two Muslim teenagers were attacked by some people in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. One victim was stripped and beaten, while the other was pushed into a pool of cold water! The attackers threatened to implicate Nitin’s sister in molestation charges. Despite a complaint filed by victim Aftab’s father on December 27, the initial police response was reportedly negligent! The police have now registered a case against six people – Nitin Madheshiya, Aditya Singh, Aryan Singh, Arjun, Yuvraj and Chandan. And the Chief Minister says the state has been wiped out from goons and miscreants??”

Fact: It was found that there is no communal angle in the attack on a Muslim youth in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. Some of the accused involved in the incident are also from the Muslim community.

21. The claim that twins were killed in the Israel-Gaza war is fake

Sadaf Afreen shared a picture and wrote, “Palestinian couple blessed with child after 16 years! The couple had 2 twins each! Israeli bombing took the lives of these four little children and their mother. One day God will surely answer for Israel’s crimes!”

Fact: The photo is from Birmingham in the year 2009. It has no connection with the Israel-Gaza war.

22. Agniveer Amritpal Singh did not get guard of honor because he died by suicide

Sadaf Afreen wrote, “Agniveer Amritpal Singh (19), was posted in Kashmir! He was martyred after being shot! His body was brought by 1 constable and 2 army personnel in a private ambulance. Neither army vehicle was provided nor any salute was given by the army! When people raised their voice, the local police saluted him!”

Fact: Investigation revealed that there is no provision for a guard of honour from the army in case of suspicious death and suicide. The army also said in a statement that Amritpal Singh died due to self-inflicted gunshot, so as per the existing policy, no ‘guard of honour’ was given to him.

23. The viral video of Nitish Kumar’s meeting with the leaders of India Alliance is old

Sharing the video of Nitish Kumar’s meeting with the leaders of India Alliance, Sadaf Afreen wrote, “Nitish Babu had already said that he belongs to everyone.”

Fact: Investigation revealed that the viral video of Nitish Kumar’s meeting with the leaders of India Alliance is a year old. In this meeting, Nitish was preparing to form India Alliance with the opposition. It is being shared with a false claim that it is recent.

24. There is no terrorist angle in the 770 kg explosives found in the house of an RSS leader in Kerala

Sadaf wrote on x, “770 Kg explosives recovered from RSS leader’s house! Kolavalloor police have seized explosives kept in the houses of local RSS leader Vadakkeil Pramod and his cousin Vadakkeil Shanta! Is this the real work of RSS?? And this news is missing from the national media!”

Fact: Investigation revealed that the accused were planning to sell illegal firecrackers during Kerala’s New Year Vishu festival. There is no terrorist angle in this case.

25. Claim about people beating up foreign Muslim students in Gujarat University for offering namaz is misleading 

Sadaf Afreen wrote, “Gujarat Hindutva mob chanting “Jai Shri Ram” beat up foreign students offering namaaz, pelted stones and vandalized the place! Injured foreign Muslim children are admitted in the hospital! Now the mob is hunting foreign Muslim students too! This is a matter of great shame!”

Fact: Investigation revealed that people had questioned the security guard about offering Namaaz under the open sky outside the hostel, in response to which the angry foreign Muslim student attacked. It can also be clearly seen in the video that the youth questioning the security guard neither raises any religious slogan, nor does he misbehave with the youth offering Namaaz, nor does he hit the foreign Muslim youth offering Namaaz first. Tension increases after the attack by the foreign student.

26. The picture shared as Jan Vishwas Maha Rally in Patna is edited

Sadaf shared a photo on Instagram and wrote, “The crowd you are seeing is from Gandhi Maidan in Patna! These people have come to listen to Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav!”

Fact: Our investigation revealed that the pictures shared as Gandhi Maidan are misleading. In fact, one of the pictures is edited, while the other picture is old.

27. Not only the mosque but also the temple was demolished in Mehrauli, Delhi

Sadaf Afreen  wrote, “Delhi Development Authority (DDA) officials demolished a 600-700 year old historical mosque in Mehrauli, Delhi without any notice! This is what is going on in the country! The faith of a community is being crushed!”

Fact: Investigation revealed that along with the mosque, a decades-old temple was also demolished. But the claim that only the mosque was demolished is misleading.

28. The claim that Muslim girl students were called Pakistani terrorists in a Kanpur school is false

Sadaf Afreen posted a video on X and wrote, “UP, Kanpur, where is our country’s education system heading?? If the school teachers themselves use abusive language for school girls, what can be worse than this! These girls were called Pakistanis, terrorists by their teacher! I feel disgusted with such teachers!”

Fact: During a debate at Harvard School in Kanpur, a student had told about the events of the current war between Hamas and Israel. This angered the Muslim students. The allegation of calling the students Pakistani or terrorists is wrong.

29. Postal ballot boxes opened in presence of Congress and BJP in Balaghat 

Sadaf Afreen  wrote, “Postal ballot boxes opened before vote counting in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, video viral on social media! Counting of votes in Madhya Pradesh is to be held on the 3rd, but why are postal ballots being counted right now?? Is this some big conspiracy?? Is this being done with the intention of benefiting a particular party?? After the video went viral, the Congress party has demanded the suspension of Balaghat collector Girish Kumar Mishra!”

Fact: Investigation revealed that the claim of opening postal ballot boxes before counting of votes in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh is false . The work of sorting postal ballots was done in the presence of Congress and BJP people in the strong room of Balaghat.

30. Claim that Palestinian woman ‘Isra Jabis’ was thrown acid and her finger was cut off in Israeli prison is false

Sadaf Afreen  wrote, “Isra Jabis was kept in prison by Israel for 8 years! In these 8 years, Israel has tortured this Palestinian woman so much that you will understand by looking at her face! Not a single finger of her hand is safe! How painful it is! When Isra was released from Israeli captivity, she hugged her family members and thanked Allah!”

Fact: The claim that Palestinian woman Israa Jabis was attacked with acid and had her finger cut off after her arrest is false. Isra, who was a suicide bomber, was injured in a car blast caused by her. She was found guilty and sent to 11 years in prison.

31. Old video of PM Modi offering chadar at Sant Kabir’s Samadhi Sthal goes viral with misleading claim

 Sadaf Afreen  shared this video on Instagram and wrote, “Devotees, are you watching?? Our secular leader offering chaadar at the shrine, bowing his head in respect! Amazing scene!”

Fact: Investigation revealed that the video of PM Modi offering chaadar at a shrine is almost six years old, where PM Modi is not offering chaadar at a shrine but at the Samadhi Sthal of Sant Kabir. The sound of Azaan in the background is edited. This video is being shared with the intention of making misleading claims and spreading propaganda.

32. The claim of a Muslim woman being burnt alive in Jharkhand is misleading

Sadaf Afreen wrote, “Jharkhand, Bokaro, a tragic incident! 15-20 people attacked the house of a woman named Amisha Parveen over a land dispute! During the fight, the mob sprinkled kerosene on the woman and set her on fire! The woman suffered more than 80 percent burns! The woman’s son Mujab Ali, who was present at the spot, tried to save his mother! In this process, both of Mujab’s hands were burnt! The woman was immediately taken to Sadar Hospital! Due to the absence of a Burn Unit there, the woman was referred to Bokaro General Hospital! The woman died during treatment!”

Fact: Investigation revealed that the claim made by people that the woman was set on fire alive is misleading. The woman had set herself on fire.

33. This video of Israeli police arresting Palestinian children is old

Sadaf Afreen  wrote, “Israeli soldiers capturing Palestinian children and locking them in cages! And all this has been happening for the last 75 years!”

Fact: The viral video on social media has nothing to do with the current events, this video is about almost seven years old.

34. The claim that a Palestinian girl was killed in an Israeli attack is false

Sadaf Afreen  wrote, “The little girl is no more. She died due to internal bleeding.”

Fact: Investigation revealed that the claim of the girl’s death in the Israeli attack is false. The girl was injured, and her family has confirmed that she is safe.

35. Video of protest against Netanyahu in Israel is misleading

Sadaf Afreen wrote, “The people of Israel shouted slogans ‘Netanyahu is a murderer’. The people of Israel are protesting against their own government.”

Fact: Investigation revealed that this matter has been presented in a distorted manner by combining two videos. The first video is 1.5 years old. In the second video, a protest is being held demanding the return of citizens kidnapped by Hamas.

36. Old picture of a child goes viral linking it to Israel-Hamas conflict 

While sharing a picture of a dead kid, Sadaf Afreen wrote, “On the Day of Judgment, I will ask Allah what my sin was?”

Fact: The picture is not related to the current Israel-Hamas conflict but is about almost 18 years old.

37. Hindu organizations did not demonstrate in support of Iqbal’s killers

Sadaf wrote, ‘Rajasthan Jaipur, 5 days ago, 18-year-old Iqbal was beaten to death by a mob. The police acted swiftly and arrested the people involved in the murder. Now people from some organisations have taken out a rally in support of the accused of Iqbal’s murder. A very shameful act.’

Fact: This protest was not in support of Iqbal’s killers. In fact, this protest was done to protest against the forceful targeting of Hindus in the Iqbal murder case and the looting of Hindu shops in the market. 

38. The claim of rape of a woman in Jaipur is false

Sadaf Afreen wrote that the incident in Rajasthan, Jaipur, Jamwaramgarh subdivision is a shame on humanity! Brutal people first raped a 25 to 30 year old woman, then burnt her alive! The dead body of the woman is burning on the roadside! This is not just the pyre of a woman, it is a blot on the face of the law keepers! Even in the 21st century, women are not safe! The monsters are tearing them apart, burning them after satisfying their lust! The government of every state is useless and incompetent in the matter of women’s safety!

Fact: Investigation revealed that this was not a case of rape and murder of a woman, but a dispute between transgenders. The claim of rape in this case is baseless.

39. There is no communal angle in the case of beating of a Muslim child in Kanpur

Sadaf Afreen wrote that a bully comes to Kanpur, Jajmau and beats a minor boy wearing a cap with kicks and punches to his heart’s content! When the bully gets tired of beating the kid, he lets him go! The police vehicle is parked there! Is there really something called law and order?? Someone is committing atrocities in the presence of the police and the police could not even stop him! How shameful is this!

Fact: Investigation revealed that there is no communal angle in this case. The name of the accused who beat the child is Mohammad Faisal, who has been arrested by the police.

40. There is no mob lynching in Shahabuddin’s death case in Jharkhand

Sadaf Afreen wrote, “Azad Samaj Party protested in Jamshedpur in the case of the mob lynching of Maulana Shahabuddin Sahib, the Imam of the mosque in Koderma, Jharkhand! Azad Samaj Party Chief Chandrashekhar Azad expressed grief over the mob lynching of Maulana Shahabuddin Sahib and said – “We will give strict punishment to the culprits involved in this lynching” and demanded ₹50 lakh compensation and a government job for the family of the deceased Maulana Shahabuddin ji!”

Fact: In our investigation, we found that Maulana Shahabuddin, a resident of Koderma district in Jharkhand, did not die due to mob lynching but from a road accident.

41. The claim that Jannatul Firdaus Mosque in Bawana was demolished illegally is misleading

Sadaf Afreen wrote, “In Bawana, Delhi, the authorities demolished a mosque named Jannat ul Firdaus with a bulldozer, calling it an illegal construction!”

Fact: Investigation revealed that the Jannat ul Firdaus Mosque was constructed illegally on land that was originally a park. Due to this, the authorities demolished it.

42. Imam Akram was not murdered, claim of communal angle is also false

Sadaf Afreen shared this matter on Instagram and wrote, “Imam Maulana Akram of the mosque was shot dead in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh! The number of goons and mafias has increased in Uttar Pradesh! Recently, the president of Jamiat was murdered in Pratapgarh.”

Fact: Investigation revealed that the claim of murder of Imam in Moradabad, UP is false. Actually, the Imam wanted to marry again but there was a dispute in the house regarding this. Due to this, the Imam committed suicide.

43. Slogans of Pakistan Zindabad were raised on the victory of Congress leader in Karnataka

Sadaf Afreen wrote, ‘They are vultures! They keep waiting for a way to tell a lie and declare a Muslim a traitor! It can be clearly heard that people are saying “Naseer Saab Zindabad”, but they use all kinds of low tactics to defame Muslims! People drenched in hatred spread the lie by calling “Naseer Saab Zindabad” as “Pakistan Zindabad1”

Fact: Our investigation revealed that “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans were indeed raised on the victory of Congress candidate Syed Nasir Hussain. Based on the FSL report and evidence, 3 accused were arrested and legal action was initiated against them.

44. Claim about Muslim being not able to marriage after abolition of Muslim Marriage Act is false

Sadaf Afreen wrote, “At 12 o’clock in the night, the Assam government abolished the 90-year-old Muslim Marriage Act in Assam! Fact Check: The claim of a minor girl being gangraped in a moving car in Jhansi is false. Actually, the girl had run away from home to marry her boyfriend, but when the boyfriend did not come, she along with her aunt fabricated the story of gangrape to extort money from the neighbouring youths.

Fact Check: The video shows a drink being made from cannabis leaves (Bhang).

52. BJP did not make the girl dance on stage to get justice for the female doctor in West Bengal

Sadaf claimed that in West Bengal, during a protest against the rape of a medical student at RG Kar Medical College, a girl was made to dance on the stage.

Fact Check:  The dance programme was not associated with the BJP. It was organized by the Ma Manasa & Behula Lakshminder Mela committee, which has a 15-year tradition of featuring various stage performances. The stage displayed banners and posters to show solidarity with the rape incident, after which regular performances were carried out.

53. The claim that BJP leaders cut a cake to welcome the IIT-BHU gangrape accused after they got bail is false

Sadaf shared a picture of BJP MLA with IIT-BHU gangraped accused and wrote, “On one hand, there is tremendous outrage in the country over the Kolkata rape-murder case! On the other hand, two of the three accused Kunal Pandey and Anand alias Abhishek Chauhan, who gangraped an IIT-BHU student from Prime Minister Modi’s parliamentary constituency Varanasi, were released on bail in just 7 months! Fact Check: Investigation revealed that the claim that BJP leaders welcomed the IIT-BHU gangrape accused by cutting a cake is false. The viral picture is about 3 years old. Accused Kunal and Abhishek got bail on 31 August 2024 while the viral photo is from July 2021. Varanasi Cantt BJP MLA Saurabh Srivastava posted these pictures on Instagram on 12 July 2021.

Fact Check: The claim of Gaurav Bhatia being beaten up by lawyers is fake. This video is from November 2019, when a parking dispute between lawyers and Delhi Police turned into a scuffle at Tis Hazari Court in Delhi.

55. Newspaper cutting saying taking bribe for good work will not be considered crime is 9 years old

Sadaf shared a newspaper clipping that states taking a bribe for the right work will no longer be considered a crime, targeting the Modi government. Sadaf wrote, “Giving bribe for the right work does not come under the category of crime’ In Amrit Kaal, taking bribe will not be considered a crime! Amazing, then the general public should continue to give bribe in government offices! Otherwise, tomorrow such a law can also be made, when those who do not give bribe will be ordered to be put in jail?”

Fact Check: The viral newspaper cutting is 9 years old. ‘Taking bribe for the right work is not a crime’ was just a proposal of the Law Commission. It was not implemented but in 2018, the Central Government made the Anti-Corruption Law stricter.

56. Rs 52 crore is the combined cost of demolition of the Hatkeshwar bridge and construction of a new one

Sadaf claimed that the Hatkeshwar Bridge was built in Ahmedabad, Gujarat at a cost of Rs 42 crore but due to poor construction material, it will now be demolished for Rs 52 crore

Fact Check: The total cost of demolition and reconstruction of Hatkeshwar Bridge is Rs 52 crore. Also, the entire cost of new construction will be recovered from the old contractor.
