The dates of the Lok Sabha elections have been announced in recent days. Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases across the country. The Chief Election Commissioner has given strict instructions to those spreading fake news and has also appealed to people to verify whether something is true or not before sharing it on social media. Meanwhile, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate claimed with full confidence during a program on India Today channel on March 22, 2024, with journalist Rajdeep Sardesai that she has never spread fake news to date. Neither has she ever promoted misleading news nor shared any edited videos on social media. Today, We will analyze these claims in our report.

At 2 minutes 20 seconds in India Today’s video, Rajdeep Sardesai asked the question, can you cross your heart and say that you have never edited the clip of Prime Minister Modi? On this, Supriya Shrinate says, ‘I can cross my heart on national TV and tell you I have never been called out for fake news, I have never edited a clip, I have never ever manipulated the Prime Minister’s speech. I cross my hand on my heart and say as the head of Congress social media and digital platform, I have never ever done that, I have never used fake news. The BJP weaponizes fake news, it demeans people, it assassinates reputations.’

Fact Check 1:

According to the report of 25 November 2023, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate had spread misleading propaganda by sharing an edited video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking off on the Tejas aircraft. Supriya Shrinate had claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was waving his hands after looking at the clouds, whereas after watching the entire video, it was revealed that PM Modi was waving his hands not at the clouds but after looking at the pilot of the second Tejas aircraft.

According to a report dated October 15, 2023, Congress spokesperson and social media in-charge Supriya Shrinate had spread misleading news regarding the death of Agniveer soldier Amritpal Singh. Supriya Shrinate had claimed that the martyr soldier Amritpal Singh was not given the Guard of Honor because he was a Agniveer, whereas it was found in the investigation that in cases of death due to suicide or self-inflicted injury in the army, the soldier is given due respect without worrying about the mode of entry into the army. In such cases, the soldiers are not entitled to military funeral as per the 1967 Army Order.

According to a report dated August 13, 2023, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate misrepresented the statement of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Supriya Shrinate claimed in a video message that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that the army would not be able to solve anything in Manipur. By saying this, the Assam CM has insulted the army, whereas the truth is that the Assam Chief Minister did not insult the army. The Chief Minister had said that the army can bring temporary solutions because permanent solutions can only come from the heart, not from bullets. The Assam Chief Minister was appealing to the people of Manipur for harmony and peace.

According to a report dated August 14, 2023, Supriya Shrinate had shared an edited video of India’s Home Minister Amit Shah. The Congress spokesperson claimed that the Home Minister had said in an election speech that the country’s first IIT – AIIMS was built by the BJP government. However, in our investigation, it was found that Amit Shah had made the statement in the context of Chhattisgarh, which was presented out of context by editing.

According to a report dated December 15, 2023, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate had shared an edited video of Mathura MP Hema Malini. Supriya Shrinate had claimed by sharing Hema Malini’s video that Hema Malini had said that MPs are suspended from the parliament for asking too many questions. However, in our investigation, this claim was found to be misleading.

Fact Check 6:

According to a report dated November 21, 2023, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate had spread misleading propaganda by referring to the killers of Kanhaiyalal in Rajasthan as BJP workers. Supriya Shrinate claimed in a press conference that the killer of Hindu tailor Kanhaiyalal was a BJP worker named Riaz. However, this claim by the Congress spokesperson was proven to be false. In reality, Riaz was not associated with the BJP.

According to a report dated March 5, 2024, after the victory of the Congress candidate in the Karnataka Rajya Sabha elections, pro-Pakistan slogans were raised within the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Supriya Shrinate had outrightly denied this and accused the BJP of conspiring. Supriya Shrinate had stated that it was not “Pakistan Zindabad” but “Nasir Saab Zindabad” that was said. Meanwhile, based on the FSL report issued by the Congress government in Karnataka, it was established that supporters of the Congress candidate in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly had raised pro-Pakistan slogans.

According to a report published on March 1, 2024, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate had shared an edited video of the interview of Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Supriya Shrinate shared the video of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari claiming that BJP minister is saying that in today’s Modi government, villages, the poor, laborers, and farmers are all suffering. However, upon investigation, it was found that Nitin Gadkari was talking about urbanization. Due to the spread of fake news by the Congress party and Supriya Shrinate, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had condemned it.

Fact Check 9:

According to a report published on January 31, 2024, a Congress spokesperson had spread misleading news regarding the caste of secretaries and PMO officials in the central government. Supriya Shrinate claimed that the government of India is run by 90 officers, these officers take the decisions of the entire budget of the country. But among them, there are only 3 people from the OBC category. After our investigation, this claim was proven to be misleading because to be serving as a secretary in the central government, one should have 15 to 25 years of experience. Therefore, OBC officers who were active before 1994 have been placed in the general category.

Fact Check 10:

According to a report published on January 6, 2024, Supriya Shrinate had spread misleading news about Chinese Hindi-speaking scholars and the RSS. The Congress spokesperson claimed that Chinese diplomats had visited the RSS headquarters in Nagpur. However, our investigation found this claim to be false. In reality, they were Chinese-Hindi scholars who had visited Nagpur as tourists and had gone on a trip to the Smriti Mandir, not to the RSS headquarters.

According to a report published on November 28, 2023, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate had referred to a survey by NDTV News and claimed that the Congress was winning in the Telangana Legislative Assembly elections. However, NDTV had declared the survey as fake news. According to NDTV, the channel had not conducted any survey for the Telangana Legislative Assembly elections.

According to a report published on August 11, 2023, Supriya Shrinate claimed that the BJP had supported the SDPI, which is a part of the PFI, in the Karnataka Panchayat elections. However, our investigation proved this claim to be false because, in the Panchayat elections, candidates did not contest based on party symbols. Moreover, Fayaz and Muhammed had privately supported the SDPI candidate, who was later suspended. In this election, there was no alliance between the BJP and the SDPI.

According to a report dated June 11, 2023, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate had spread misleading news regarding India’s debt. Supriya Shrinate claimed that under the Modi government, debt had tripled and this debt was being taken for the benefit of wealthy individuals. However, our investigation found this claim to be misleading. A country’s debt is viewed in relation to its GDP. India’s debt is 83% of its GDP. In contrast, Japan’s debt is over 200% of its GDP. The debt of countries like America, Italy, France, and Singapore is also over 100% of their GDP. Secondly, it was during the COVID era that the Modi government mostly incurred debt. This debt was taken to provide free vaccines to citizens and free rations to 80 crore poor people.

According to a report dated August 5, 2022, Supriya Shrinate had spread misleading news regarding disrespect to the Indian national flag against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She retweeted a tweet claiming that Prime Minister Modi had disrespected the Indian tricolor on International Yoga Day. However, our investigation found this claim to be misleading.

According to a report dated September 8, 2023, Supriya Shrinate had shared an edited video of Home Minister Amit Shah. She claimed that Amit Shah had ultimately accepted the Rafale aircraft scam. However, the investigation found this claim to be incorrect. In reality, during a report card event of the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Bhopal, Home Minister Amit Shah commented on the scams of the Congress.

According to a report dated August 3, 2023, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate had shared an edited video of BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi. Supriya Shrinate claimed that BJP government minister Meenakshi Lekhi was openly threatening about the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Parliament. However, the investigation found this claim to be misleading. State Minister Meenakshi Lekhi had jokingly mentioned the ED’s matter, but the Congress spokesperson edited the video, cutting out the humor, and shared it.

According to a report dated April 17, 2023, Supriya Shrinate made a misleading claim about removing Maulana Azad’s name from NCERT textbooks. The Congress spokesperson tweeted alleging that the cowardly BJP government had removed Maulana Azad’s name from NCERT books. However, the investigation found this claim to be incorrect. Maulana Azad’s name was not present in the older editions of the textbooks either.

According to a report dated March 3, 2023, a spokesperson for the Congress party spread misleading news regarding the results of the Tripura Legislative Assembly elections. Supriya Shrinate claimed that the Congress won 5 seats in the Tripura Legislative Assembly elections. However, upon investigation, this claim was found to be misleading. In reality, the Congress party only won on 3 seats.

According to a report dated February 9, 2023, Supriya Shrinate shared an edited video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and spread false news. The Congress spokesperson claimed that the Prime Minister gave a figure of 8 crore for the Jal Jeevan Mission in the Lok Sabha and then a day later gave a figure of 11 crore in the Rajya Sabha. However, upon investigation, Shrinate’s claim was proven to be incorrect. There is no discrepancy in the figures provided by the Prime Minister for the beneficiaries of the Jal Jeevan Mission in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. In the Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Modi elaborated that initially there were 3 crore water connections, which have now increased to 11 crore, meaning that 8 crore connections have been added.

According to a report dated August 11, 2023, Supriya Shrinate spread misleading news regarding a speech given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament. The Congress spokesperson claimed that the construction of IIMC Mizoram was done during the Congress government, but PM Modi is lying by saying it was done during the BJP government. In reality, during the Congress-UPA government in 2011, only a temporary building for IIMC Aizawl was constructed. During the tenure of the Narendra Modi government in 2015, the construction of permanent campus and hostels began.

According to a report dated March 19, 2024, after the data of the electoral bond came out, a leftist journalist made a misleading claim that they had purchased the electoral bond in 2018, but the Election Commission’s website shows 2020. Supriya Shrinate, the Congress spokesperson, shared Poonam Agrawal’s claim and accused the electoral bond of being fraudulent. Investigation found that journalist Poonam had actually purchased the electoral bond in 2020, not in 2018. Later, Poonam Agrawal apologized for spreading lies, citing the COVID era and her weak memory.

Conclusion: Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate has not only shared one or two but 21 fake and misleading news on her social media handle from 2023 until March 26, 2024.
