During the West Bengal election campaign in Jhargram, a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi went viral on social media showing him taking a brief break to eat Jhalmuri from a street vendor. Soon after, a graphic began circulating claiming that the vendor who served Jhalmuri to the Prime Minister during the roadshow in Jhargram, West Bengal, was an SPG commando.

Sharing the video, the handle Ritu Chaudhary wrote, ”Look, bro, even here it’s a scam! That Jhal Muri guy turned out to be an SPG commando.”

Another handle, Umesh Thakran, asserted, ”Tell the Sahib that this is a lie!”

The video was also shared by several other handles, such as Shilpi Yadav, Dr Ranjan, Nikhil Yadav, Dinesh Chauhan and Rahul Yadav.

Fact Check

In our fact-check investigation, we conducted a keyword search on Google using terms such as “Who is the Jhalmuri vendor who served PM Modi in West Bengal” and found a report by News 24. According to the report, the man seen serving Jhalmuri to Prime Minister Narendra Modi is Vikram Sahu and is originally from Gaya, Bihar.

Vikram studied only up to Class 9 and could not continue his education due to financial constraints. He earns around ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 per day, which helps him support his household, including his mother Sunita Devi and father Uttam Sah. According to Vikram, the brief interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was simple and non-political. He said the Prime Minister spoke with him about his family, education, and work, making the moment memorable for him.

We also found a video posted on the NDTV YouTube channel on April 19, in which, during a conversation with an NDTV reporter, Vikram stated that he is from Gaya, Bihar, and has been selling Jhalmuri in Jhargram, West Bengal for the past 12 years. During the conversation, he also mentioned that his brief meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the roadshow was unexpected and memorable for him.

In conclusion, the viral claim that the Jhalmuri vendor seen during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s West Bengal visit is an SPG commando is false. The vendor has been identified as Vikram Sahu from Gaya, Bihar, who has been selling Jhalmuri in West Bengal for the past 12 years.
