Sadhguru is not against allopathy

On Sunday, March 17, renowned spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev underwent brain surgery at the Apollo Hospital in Delhi to address internal bleeding. Medical professionals overseeing his care reported that he had been making steady progress following the operation, with his vital signs improving. Despite this positive development, certain segments of social media users, characterized by communist leanings and Islamist ideologies, took to mocking Sadhguru by resurrecting a tweet from his past. Dated November 10, 2014, the tweet in question stated, “Allopathy is purely chemical. Ayurveda is herbal. Siddha is essentially elemental in nature.”

Alleged journalist Rohini Singh wrote on X, ‘Wishing Sadhguru a speedy recovery and more rationality, more coherence, less anti science spiel and lesser misguiding of citizens.’

Mohammad Zubair, a rabid Islamist and a co-founder of Alt News, retweeted a post by Sadhguru from 2014, potentially intending to ridicule him.

Dr. Sanjay wrote, ‘For a whole life you preach – Ayurveda. When it comes to your own health , you choose modern medicine. Waah. His followers should think before going to Ayurveda. I wish him a speedy recovery.’

The Cancer doctor tweeted, ‘Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev has been experiencing headache for over a week. And yes he didn’t went to Ayurveda or traditional healing approaches which he preaches. Instead he went to Apollo hospitals, did a CT scan, diagnosed with bleed (probably acute on chronic subdural hematoma) and a Modern medicine doctor saved his life but cutting his skull. Imagine millions of people who are made to believe in alternative medicine goes to Ayurveda and other quacks, believing in word salads, who is responsible for their lives?’

Aam Aadmi Party supporter Belal Ahmed wrote while quoting Sadhguru’s old tweet, ‘I didn’t know Apollo follows Ayurveda treatment. I wish Sadhguru a speedy recovery!’

Upon initiating our investigation through a comprehensive Google search utilizing relevant keywords, we unearthed a video dating back over a decade on Sadhguru’s official YouTube channel. Titled “Are Ayurveda and Siddha Better Than Allopathy,” the 8-minute-long video provided crucial insights into Sadhguru’s nuanced perspective on the efficacy of different medical modalities.

Within the video, spanning from 0:37 seconds to 1 minute, Sadhguru addressed the topic of allopathy, offering a balanced viewpoint. He acknowledged allopathy as a form of medical treatment centered on chemical manipulation of the system, particularly emphasizing its significance during emergencies. Sadhguru’s remarks included, “Allopathy is purely chemical, chemical manipulation of the system, when it’s an emergency you must use it.

Furthermore, he cautioned against prolonged reliance on medication. In his words, “But if it’s a long…you know if it’s a chronic ailment which is going to be with you for a long time, and you are going to take some medicine for a long time, definitely popping pills for long periods of time is not a good thing.”

Upon further investigation, we discovered a tweet from the Sadhguru Archives featuring a conversation between Sadhguru and Doctor Pratap Reddy, where Sadhguru acknowledged the pivotal role of modern medicine, colloquially referred to as allopathy. In this exchange, Sadhguru says, “If there was no medical science as its, I would say even half the people from the audience would be dead by now. Because the average life expectancy of an Indian in 1947 was 28 years old today it’s 64. One important factor is medical science, is the way it is. So I’m trying to belittle or make fun of media’s sciences, it’s very significant and what it’s achieved in the last 30 to 40 years.”

These insights from both the video discussions shed light on Sadhguru’s nuanced perspective on modern medicine, commonly known as allopathy. While acknowledging allopathy’s reliance on chemical intervention and advising its use when necessary, Sadhguru also commended the achievements of modern medicine in substantially improving life expectancy rates over time.

Consequently, it becomes evident that certain segments of leftist and Islamist social media users have chosen to selectively interpret Sadhguru’s decade-old tweet, disregarding the broader context provided by his subsequent statements and engagements with medical professionals.
