A video went viral on social media with the claims that the person who was getting beaten by the mob of lawyers in the video was none other than Gaurav Bhatia of the BJP. Islamist Propagandist Harun Khan shared the viral video and wrote, Video of beating of BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia.

Fact Check

We started our research with a keyword search “Advocate Gaurav Bhatia assaulted inside the court premises” and found that according to a report by Hindustan Times, dated March 21, 2024, an incident unfolded at Gautam Budh Nagar district court in Greater Noida’s Surajpur where an unidentified advocate allegedly behaved inappropriately and forcefully snatched the collar band of BJP’s national spokesperson and senior Supreme Court lawyer Gaurav Bhatia.

Following our research, we stumbled upon a report by Bar and Bench released on March 20, 2024. The report highlighted the Supreme Court Bar Association’s (SCBA) response to the assault on Senior Advocate Gaurav Bhatia in a Noida court. According to the report, during a strike observed by lawyers, Gaurav Bhatia had his collar band forcefully snatched inside the district court premises. The SCBA expressed strong condemnation towards this incident, labeling it as both unprofessional and illegal. Such actions, the Association emphasized, bring disgrace to the entire legal community. The SCBA also urged the Executive Committee of Janpad Dewani and Faujdari Bar Association Gautam Budh Nagar to find the lawyer responsible, notify him, and take strict action against him. Moreover, the report also includes the official letter from the SCBA regarding this incident.

We found that Bhatia was indeed attacked inside the court premises on Wednesday (March 20). Now talking about the video going viral claiming attack on lawyer Bhatia, we began by closely examining every detail in the viral video to understand the whole situation clearly. What we noticed first was that the person being beaten by the lawyers wasn’t clearly visible, leaving us wondering if he was truly Gaurav Bhatia from the BJP or not. Moreover, the reports on Gaurav Bhatia assault reveals that he was attacked by a single lawyer, however, the viral video shows a group of lawyers attacking someone. These striking details raised the question about the authenticity of the viral video.

To confirm authenticity of the video, we extracted different keyframes from the viral video and performed reverse image search. Reverse image search led us to a video uploaded by India Times four years ago.

The caption of the video reads, “Police, Lawyers Fight At Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court, Vehicles Set On Fire.” In the video of about 1 minute 14 seconds, we saw the same scene of chaos which can be seen in the video going viral on X.

Hence, the video going viral on X claiming to be of assault on Gaurav Bhatia is fake. The video is from November 2019, when a parking dispute between lawyers and Delhi Police at Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court had escalated into a scuffle.
