The Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party, which promised to eradicate corruption, has been making headlines in recent months owing to its role in the liquor policy scam. The ostensibly honest party has suffered a severe setback after former Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia was arrested by the CBI for his involvement in the now-cancelled liquor excise policy.

Following Sisodia’s arrest, new names have emerged in connection with the scam. Raghav Chadha, an AAP MP, was named by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in its second chargesheet. However, he stated that his name was added as a meeting attendee. The ED has also levelled serious charges against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Not only that but Sanjay Singh, the AAP’s spokesperson, was listed in the chargesheet as well.

However, after the ED named AAP’s spokesperson in the chargesheet, many AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, claimed that Sanjay’s name was written by mistake in the charge sheet. The ED has now admitted its mistake and rectified their error.

The Twitter handle of the AAP tweeted that the ED, who dances to Modi’s tune, has finally admitted its error. The entire case is a hoax.

In another tweet, the AAP stated, “Modi’s ED biggest U-turn!” The ED stated that they included Sanjay Singh’s name inadvertently in the charge sheet. This makes it evident that the entire inquiry is a hoax. The liquor scam did not take place.”

Besides, Sanjay Singh said that the ED, which dances to Modi’s tune, has for the first time in history recognized its mistake. He went on to say that PM Modi is attempting to smear Kejriwal and the AAP’s image. They will not succeed no matter how hard they try since the ED’s inquiry is Modi’s conspiracy.

Apart from that the Zee Delhi NCR Haryana’s Twitter account also posted that Sanjay Singh’s name in the chargesheet was mentioned by mistake.

Fact Check

We started our research with a keyword search “ED mentioned Sanjay Singh’s name in a chargesheet” and came across a few media reports. According to the Indian Express, after the ED listed Sanjay Singh’s name in the chargesheet, on April 2, Singh’s lawyer sent a legal notice to the ED director Mishra and Assistant Director Singh asking them to issue an apology for making false and derogatory statements against him or face civil and criminal proceedings.

After the ED received the legal notice, they responded, saying that Sanjay Singh’s name appeared four times in the liquor scam chargesheet. Out of that four, in one reference his name was written by mistake instead of Rahul Singh. The error happened due to a typographical error. However, his name is still there in three references.

Not only that, according to the ED team’s response to Sanjay Singh’s lawyer, his name appeared four times in the scam chargesheet. And, due to a typographical error, his name was mentioned in one reference instead of Rahul Singh’s. However, as soon as the ED became aware of the error, and even before Sanjay Singh sent the notice, on April 20, 2023, the correction measures were taken and the ED filed an appeal in court to correct the error.

Furthermore, the ED accused Sanjay Singh of intentionally making false statements to the media in order to smear the ED’s image, despite being aware that this matter is currently sub judice (under judicial consideration) before the special court.

Hence, given the aforementioned facts, it is clear that AAP politicians are purposefully making misleading statements and tweets in order to portray Sanjay Singh’s name as not being mentioned in the liquor scam chargesheet. However, his name is still mentioned in the three references.
