Fact Check : No, The Indian flag wasn’t replaced with the Saffron flag

Times Now reporter Imran Khan posted a tweet claiming that the Karnataka Congress President had tweeted saying “replacing the National flag with the Saffron flag at #Shimoga is a breakdown of law and order.”

When we checked the tweets of DK Shivakumar, we found that he has posted the tweet but he had not attached any video to support his claim.
So we decided to again look into the video posted by the Times Now reporter. In that video, students were waving the Saffron flag but on a flag pole which did not carry the Indian flag prior to that. Many state institutions in India have these flagpoles which are used only on national occasions such as Republic Day or Independence Day.

Journalist Swati Chaturvedi demanded the arrest of the students while reacting to a tweet of Imran Khan.

Ravinder Singh of Khalsa Aid also asked the Indian media to label students as anti-national and terrorists!

So we decided to check this matter and found that this video doesn’t show any instance of the removal of the Indian flag, thus squashing the insinuation that the Indian flag was replaced.

In India, many schools and colleges celebrate Independence Day and Republic Day by unfurling the Indian flag on the occasion of 15th August and 26th January. But to further verify this we searched the internet to see if this college unfurls the Indian flag on a regular basis.

We found an old video where it was clearly visible that the Indian flag was not flying on the flagpole. Thus the claim that the Indian flag was removed before waving the saffron flag is completely unsubstituted.

Update: Shivamogga SP BM Laxmi Prasad has also confirmed our claim and said to ANI, “There was a report that the national flag was lowered & in place of that a saffron flag was put up but there was no national flag on the poll. Only a saffron flag was hoisted on top of the poll& later they removed it themselves”
