Mohammed Zubair, a fact checker and dog whistler, took to his Twitter account and claimed that India is one of the top four countries that give donations to the UN Democracy Fund. It runs various NGOs and organizations, the majority of which are tied to George Soros.

With his claim, Zubair, who as per the Delhi police has lured many funders from Pakistan and Gulf nations for his anti-Hindu stance, tried to portray that India despite holding anti Soros views is the 4th largest donor of the UN Democracy Fund.

Another fraudster journalist, who used the charity funds for herself, and an anti-Hindu bigot, Rana Ayyub, sharing the Indian Express news report wrote, “No caption Needed.”

Another propaganda news anchor, Nidhi Razdan, who got scammed with a promise of Harvard job, taking jibe at the Foreign Minister, Jaishankar, wrote, “EAM Jaishankar called George Soros old and dangerous but India is among the top contributors to the UN Democracy Fund.”

Besides, one of these propagandists, a Twitter user going by the display name Katyusha, a Congress supporter, stated that the BJP questions Rahul Gandhi’s ties to Soros, while India is the fourth largest donor to Soros’ Open Society Foundation.

Fact Check

In the first step of our fact checking, we discovered a tweet from Indian Express using the keyword search “George Soros and Indian Express.” The Indian Express tweeted an infographic with statistics detailing India’s contribution to the UN Democracy Fund from 2005 to 2022.

From 2005 through 2014, during the UPA era, India had contributed significantly to the UN Democracy Fund. In 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011, when Manmohan Singh was Prime MinisterIndia gave $5 million to the UN Democracy Fund. However, there were no donation given in the year 2007 and 2010.

Moreover, according to the infographic, when the BJP government took the power, India brought the donation figures down. India contributed $200,000 in 2014 and 2015, however funding was reduced to $50,000 in 2016. There were no donations made in 2017. India donated $100,000 in 2018 and 2019. And in the year 2020, 2021, and 2022 India gave $150,000 to UN Democracy Fund.

Furthermore, in our subsequent research, we obtained contributor data from the UN Democracy Fund website. The data displays the same numbers, revealing that India placed fourth among major UN donors in terms of overall funding from 2005 to 2022. Mohammed Zubair cherry-picked the information to depict India as the UN’s biggest donor, but he deliberately did not mention that the donation has declined significantly since 2014, when the BJP came to power.

The Only Fact team made this graphical representation for the better understanding of readers based on the data provided bye UN democracy fund. The graph below shows India’s dramatic fall in donation since 2014. Prior to 2014, that is, between 2005 to 2014India donated 96.9%; however, from 2014 to 2022, India donated just 3.1%.

As a result, the claim made by Zubair and Rana Ayyub is misleading. They selectively quoted the Indian Express’s report and statistics to show that, despite its anti-Soros views, India is the greatest contributor of UN Democracy Fund. But the reality is, after the BJP came in power, India has witnessed the drastic fall in the funds generated to UN.
