Christian Youth was not beaten by a Hindu Mob in India

On March 16, 2023, propaganda human right handle South Asian Human Rights Watch shared a video that purported to show a mob brutally attacking a guy in India. The tweet claimed that a Hindu mob brutally attacked a Christian youth and that this incident was part of a rising trend of mob lynching in India, which is fueling communal violence and religious intolerance. The tweet also called on the international community to take notice of this situation.

Pakistani Twitter handle with the name Imdad Ullah Sherani shared the same video and wrote, Brutal attack on a Christian by a Hindu mob in India.

Apart from this anti-Hindu twitter handle Shirin Khan also shared the same video and wrote, Brutal attack on a Christian by a Hindu mob in India, A country where mob lynchings are on the rise.

So, is it true that a Christian was brutally beaten by a Hindu mob in India? Let’s Fact Check.

Fact Check

During our investigation, we searched for relevant hashtags like Dalit youth, Hindu mob, and Christian attacked on Twitter. During this, we came across a tweet by the Twitter handle ‘Voice of Dalits’ from December 28, 2022. Interestingly, the video shared in this tweet was the same as the one shared by the South Asian Human Rights Watch, Imdad Ullah Sherani, and Shirin Khan but with a different claim. Moreover, ‘Voice of Dalits’ claimed that the video showed the inhumane treatment of a Dalit youth by seven upper-caste Hindu youths in Gujarat.

To further investigate the conflicting claims, we conducted a keyword search with the words ‘mob beat a Dalit youth in Gujarat’ and found a report by the Deccan Herald published on December 22, 2022. According to this report, the victim’s name was Alpesh Parmar, and he had befriended a girl through social media. The duo met on several occasions, but their friendship did not last. However, after this Parmar allegedly posted objectionable comments about the girl and her friend on social media, which led to the controversy.

Besides, on December 11, 2022, the girl went to a temple and made her visit live on social media. Parmar got to know her live location through the live telecast and came to stalk her. The girl then called up her friends, including the suspects who allegedly thrashed Parmar.

Moreover, the report also said that this incident was also highlighted by the Gujarat congress working president and MLA Jignesh Mevani. So, we decided to go through his Twitter profile to confirm whether Jignesh mevani, the Deccan Herald report, South Asian Human rights watch, and Voice of Dalits are talking about the same incident or not.

In the meantime, we found a tweet from Jignesh Mevani’s Twitter handle from December 22, 2022, in which he shared the same video that had been shared by the South Asian Human Rights Watch, Imdad Ullah Sherani, Shirin Khan, and ‘Voice of Dalits.’

This confirms that all these sources were indeed talking about the same incident but with the different claims. However, the Deccan Herald report contradicts the claims made by the South Asian Human Rights Watch and ‘Voice of Dalits’ regarding the identity and motive of the victim and the attackers as it was a clear case of online harassment and stalking.

So, all these points prove that claims made by the South Asian Human Rights Watch, Imdad Ullah Sherani, and Shirin Khan that a Christian Youth was attacked by a Hindu mob is false and misleading.
