On March 21, 2023, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake shook North India, sending shock waves of fear among the people. Moreover, the memory of the recent earthquake that devastated Turkey just a month prior, added to the panic. The epicenter of the earthquake was later located near Jurm, in northeastern Afghanistan. However, later social media was flooded with news and pictures regarding the earthquake. A Twitter handle with the name Salman shared a picture of a collapsing building and wrote, 3 people killed in karnah kupwara, Indian occupied Jammu Kashmir.

Fact Check

Our investigation began with a reverse image search of the picture shared on social media by various Twitter handles, claiming that it was taken in Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir. During the search, we stumbled upon a report by NBC News that was published on February 6, 2023. The report detailed the catastrophic aftermath of the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria. Besides, as we went through the report, we discovered the exact same picture of a collapsing building that had been shared on social media. However, the report stated that the picture was taken in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, not in Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir, as claimed by the Twitter handles.

Furthermore, our investigation led us to another report by Yahoo News, which was published on February 7, 2023. This report was also related to the aftermath of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. As we delved into the report, we once again encountered the same picture of a collapsing building that had been shared on social media. Moreover, the Yahoo News report also confirmed that the picture was taken in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, and not in Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir, as claimed by the Twitter handles.

Apart from this, the claim that 3 people died in kupwara is also false and baseless. The official Twitter handle of JK Media also tweeted regarding the whole incident and informed that no one has died in Karnah, Kupwara. Moreover, they also requested people not to pay heed to these rumors.

So, all these points prove that the claims made on social media about the picture being from Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir, are baseless and unfounded. Moreover, The picture is not related to the recent earthquake that hit North India but to Turkey.
