A girl was denied entry at the Golden temple

A video of a girl with a tricolor painted on her cheeks being denied entry into the Golden temple recently went viral on numerous social media platforms. The man in the video refuses to let her enter the temple because she is wearing tricolor on her cheek. When the girl questions why she is being denied entry due to the tricolor, the man says, “This isn’t India. This is Punjab.”

While many social media users have condemned the act, others have come to the rescue of the sevadar. Rahul Tahiliani, a Twitter user, shared another video in which the tricolour is not visible on the girl’s cheek. He wrote, “Look at the face of this girl. There is no flag or tricolor. She was sent back by the sevadar for wearing a skirt which is not allowed. She comes back again, this time with tricolor face paint, and tries to use nationalism as a cover up.”

According to Rahul’s claim, the girl was denied entry inside the shrine, because she did not follow the dress code.

Besides, another Twitter user, Jasveer Singh Muktsar, shared another video from the incident where few people are seen taking a man who was probably a friend or a relative of that girl to the dustbin and showing him the tobaccos thrown inside it. The Twitter user claimed that the girl was carrying a tobacco.

Not only that, in another tweet, Jasveer tweeted a video where a sevadar, Sarabjit Singh, is heard saying that the girl was denied entry inside the temple because she was wearing a skirt.

Is it true that the girl in the viral video was denied entry inside the Golden temple because she was wearing a skirt and carrying a tobacco? Lets find the truth behind these claims.

Fact Check

In order to verify the first claim made by the Twitter user Rahul, we began our research by visiting the website of the Sri Harmander Sahib to learn about the dress code being followed there. However, we did not find the dress code requirements specified there. Our team tried contacting the authorities, but we couldn’t reach them. Moreover, we emailed them with our inquiry, and we will update our report accordingly.

Further, we checked the website of Golden temple’s Tourism. According to the information on the website, there is no prescribed dress code for devotees. However, there are some criteria that must be followed. A scarf should be worn over one’s head, and worshippers should avoid wearing sleeveless or short dresses.

After learning about the Golden temple’s dress code rule, in the next step, we proceeded to determine if the girl in the viral video was wearing a skirt. According to the video clip shared by the Twitter user who claimed she was wearing a skirt, a girl can be seen wearing a knee-length dress along with a leggings below. Her dress was below the knee length. So, the claim that she was wearing a skirt is misleading.

Aside from that, we also found that in the past, tourists were able to enter the Golden temple wearing short skirts/pants and surprisingly no fuss was made out of it.

Furthermore, we also checked through various media reports to verify if the girl was carrying tobacco. According to a few news media outlets, the girl in the viral video was from Haryana. We combed through Haryana’s local media sources to get a better insight of the situation. Moreover, on the Haryana Tak’s YouTube channel, we found a video titled, “जिस लड़की को रोका अब उसके पिता ने सुनाई आपबीती.”

Haryana Tak

The man in the video, Rajeev Mehta, resident of Haryana, is the father of a girl. He is the same person who was seen accompanying a girl in the video clip shared by the Twitter user Jasveer Singh. In a 23-minute interview with a journalist, he talks about the sequence of events that transpired in the Golden temple.

According to Rajeev, on Saturday, they visited the Wagah Border and then the Golden temple. The sevak at the temple instructed his daughter to remove the tricolour painted on her cheeks while she was standing in a queue. When she objected and inquired about the issue with the tricolor, the sevadar said, “This is not India. This is Punjab.”

Rajeev further adds that after his daughter was denied entry to the temple, they approached the committee members. Members of the committee apologized for the sevadar’s inappropriate behaviour and asked them to visit the shrine after they remove the tricolour. He asked his daughter to wipe the tricolour from her cheek while they waited in line. Later, a guy comes by and takes them to the garbage bin, saying, “See, this is what Indians do. They carry tobacco and cigarettes.”

Using the Haryana Tak’s video, we linked the various clips from the incident going viral on Twitter with misleading claims. The Twitter users are pulling the video clips out of context and circulating it with the fabricated claims to cover up the actions of sevadar.

Besides, the video shared by the Twitter user Rohit, in which a tricolour is not visible on the girl’s cheek, was taken after she was denied entry inside the temple. As a result, the tricolour is not visible on her face. Furthermore, she was not carrying any tobacco. The sevaks present there were only pointing out how other devotees were breaching the rules by carrying tobacco and cigarettes.
