On 16 September 2021, official twitter handle of the Congress party posted a tweet with a poster which claimed that Uttar Pradesh is the number 1 (leading) state in murder and kidnapping cases as per NCRB 2020 data.
Many congress leaders also retweeted it including the Chairmen of Congress Social Media, Rohan Gupta.
So, we decided to verify the data of the NCRB 2020 Report and found that this claim is manipulated.
Fact Check
Uttar Pradesh has the highest population in India. So we need to check crimes per lakh population to find out which state is actually number 1 in crimes. Simultaneously, we need to check data of other serious crimes like rapes and riots, too.
Presented below is the state-wise data of kidnapping cases as per the NCRB 2020 Report. Uttar Pradesh has reported 5.6 crimes per lakh population while many opposition parties ruled states have a much higher statistic in comparison.
Now check state-wise data of murders in the NCRB 2020 Report. There are 1.7 murder cases has been reported per lakh population. Which again is a much lower figure in comparison to other states.
Rajasthan is top in rape cases with 13.9 rape cases per lakh population. While Kerela is at the top in rioting cases of 10 cases per lakh population. Some BJP ruled states also appear top in other categories, but the claim of UP being the number 1 (leading) state in murder and kidnapping is not backed by facts available and misleading.
