The Rashtriya Swamsevak Sangh, a Hindu group, has been steadfast in their demand for a ban on cow slaughter for many years, as cows are regarded as sacred animals in the Hindu faith. In fact, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat demanded that there be an all-India law against cow slaughter and urged vigilantes to follow the regulations.

However, a claim has recently gone viral on social media claiming that the RSS magazine has stated that eating beef is permissible in the Vedas. Adnan Ali Khan, a Twitter user, uploaded a screenshot. According to a screenshot of an article published on Twitter, an article in the RSS magazine “Organiser” asserts that eating beef is allowed in the Vedas.

Apart from that, numerous media outlets, including India Tv, Patrika, Alive News, News Track, Ink Khabar, and Citizen Alert, have previously claimed the above mentioned claim in their reports.

Fact Check

At the outset of our research, to seek clarification on this matter, our team contacted a member of the Organiser and acquired the original article from 2015, which has been the subject of this continuing controversy.

After studying the original material, we discovered that these claims are completely false and misleading. They make no mention of the Vedas allowing the consumption of beef in their article.

At the start of the article, the author, while quoting the great scholar of Sanskrit, Dr. SB Varnekar, clearly states that, “Apropos the current contrived controversy claiming that the Vedas permit beef-eating and even call for the slaughter of cows and bulls, two important points need to be borne in mind.” The term “apropos” refers to something or someone. The author did not assert that the Vedas allow beef intake; rather, he or she was citing the controversy in which it was claimed that the Vedas permit beef consumption. The whole point was misinterpreted all these years.

The author goes on to emphasize the importance of cows in the Vedas, saying that the word “aghnya” appears several times throughout the Vedas. The term “aghnya” means cow. According to the Nirukta, commonly known as the Vedangas, the definition of aghnya is “one who does not deserve to be killed.” Cows are revered as devatas (deities) in 8 richas of the Rig Veda (VI.28). The Rig Veda clearly forbids killing cows.

Furthermore, the article accuses the British for playing dirty politics by tampering with Hindu religious history, stating that in 1857, the British in India began to explore ways to offend Hindu religious beliefs in the Vedas and cows. To mock Hindus, they began to fabricate evidence of beef-eating in the Vedas.

The article stressed the need to avoid beef consumption not only religiously but also scientifically. It detailed the many adverse effects that might result from eating beef.

Nowhere in the article does the author state that eating beef is permitted by the Vedas. The article emphasized the holiness of cows in the Vedas while debunking many fake claims about the Vedas made by an Islamic website. Throughout the years, the misleading notion that the RSS magazine had declared that cow eating was permitted by the Vedas spread. The media outlets that disseminated this misleading claim never took the time to re-read the entire article and rectify their errors.

To understand more about Organiser’s stand on beef consumption, we came across an opinion report which clearly states Organiser is against the idea of beef consumption.
