Viral claim says people in viral video carrying AK-47 rifles are Bajrang Dal members.

An anti-Hindu Twitter account by the name of Davinder Pal Singh recently uploaded a video of a soldier carrying an AK-47 rifle while wearing civilian clothing. The tweet referred to them as “saffron terrorists” and questioned where these weapons came from.

The user, while tweeting the video, wrote, “From where did these saffron terrorists get AK-47 guns? Is there an intention to make the country Manipur? Why are the police not taking action? Well, bulldozers are kept to demolish the houses of the poor and the afflicted, not the terrorists. Everything will be remembered!”

Accompanying the video is a message that questions the identity of individuals wielding weapons and seemingly targeting Muslims. The message urges political figures to refrain from exploiting religious groups for political gain. Further, it mentions that the individuals shown in the video with weapons are members of the Hindu organization Bajrang Dal.

Similarly, Kashif Arsalaan, known for disseminating inflammatory content and false information, has also shared the same video showing army personnel. In his tweet, Arsalaan claims that these people are members of Bajrang Dal.

Fact Check

The claims made by both Davinder and Arsalaan have been found to be highly misleading. As revealed in a Dainik Bhaskar report, the individuals seen in plain attire and armed with AK-47 rifles are, in fact, army personnel. These soldiers were deployed in the vicinity of the Nalhareshwar temple at a time when a group was engaging in repeated gunfire from the nearby hillside.

On July 31, the Jalabhishek Yatra commenced from Nalhareshwar temple. The procession had covered only a short distance of 500 meters when it came under attack from a group of agitators. Consequently, the devotees hastily retreated and sought refuge within the temple premises. Subsequently, the assailants initiated gunfire from a nearby hill.

More than 4,000 individuals, including temple volunteers and participants in the yatra, were trapped within the temple compound amid the eruption of violence. Eyewitnesses within the temple recounted the presence of a small contingent of police officers at the time of the disturbance. When the situation escalated, the attendees who had been marching ahead hurried back towards the temple.

Despite their efforts, the limited police presence was unable to effectively control the situation, prompting urgent appeals for assistance from higher authorities. With only a handful of officers stationed within the temple to manage the sizable crowd, the miscreants encircled the temple premises, exacerbating the disruption.

As the turmoil extended towards Tiranga Park, the temple came under gunfire, prompting the on-site officers to request immediate backup. Although the responding officers from Nuh City faced challenges in reaching the Shiva temple in time, a group of plain-clothed army personnel from the crime investigation team managed to arrive on the scene. These officers, equipped with AK-47 rifles, engaged the rioters on the hillside as they retreated, effectively restoring a measure of control.
