Man brutally thrashing Dalit PAC inspector with shovel in CCTV footage is Muslim, not upper caste Hindu

On Twitter, a Pakistani allegedly turned South Asian Human Rights Watch (SAHRW) account that is undeniably famous for tarnishing India’s image globally tweeted a disturbing video where a man wearing kameez and pyajama can be seen brutally hitting a man with a shovel. According to the SAHR who tweeted the video footage, the man seen in the video is an upper caste Hindu who violently beat a retired Dalit PAC inspector. The heartbreaking attacks, they continued, “shed light on the pervasive discrimination faced by Dalits in India.”

Fact Check

In the start of our research, we did the relevant keyword search and came across a report by The Pioneer. According to their report, a man shown in the video hitting a Dalit PAC police inspector is Zarif Ansari, and not an upper caste Hindu.

The incidence which took place in May 2023, is from Sikhera village under Sikhera police station of Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The victim Garibdas, a retired Dalit PAC inspector, was having an illicit relationship with the wife of Zarif Ansari, as per the accused statements and this pushed him to carry out the heinous act.

On May 18, 2023, in the late afternoon, Garibdas was conversing with the shopkeeper in the village while seated at a pesticide store when Zarif Ansari, a member of the same village, arrived and repeatedly beat him with a shovel. Garibdas suffered severe injuries after Ansari struck him in the head and neck. In just 17 seconds, the victim was viciously pounded nine times with the shovel before he collapsed in a pool of blood.

Afterwards, the assailant fled the crime scene and surrendered to the police with his weapon. The retired inspector was bleeding when the police arrived at the crime scene, but they managed to get him to the hospital with the help of the locals. Due to his critical condition, the medical staff transferred the injured to Meerut. But the victim was later pronounced dead.

In addition, the same CCTV video image was found in the Free Press Journal report, where it was stated that a man in the CCTV footage is Zarif Ansari, who killed Garibdas, on the suspicion of having an affair with his wife. The family members of the deceased filed a case against the accused.

In the last step, we also obtained a copy of the FIR that was filed against Zarif Ansari. The deceased’s widow gave a statement that on May 18, 2023, around midday, her husband Garibdas had just returned from the farm when he received a call from someone. He then proceeded to Dinesh’s shop. While he was still seated in the shop, the accused, Zarif Ansari, entered with a shovel in hand and began striking him with the intention to murder him.

Hence, the claim made by SAHR is misleading because the accused was a Muslim named Zarif Ansari and not an upper caste from the Hindu community.
