On the microblogging site, the user going by the handle The Kashmir Narrative, shared a news from the Kashmir. The twitter user made a highly controversial claim that the Indian army killed a 21 year old kid in Sopore town. The user added that they forced him to install a CCTV camera over an electric transformer, without disconnecting the electric supply and due to this he was burnt to death. He further said that the “Indian army enjoys absolute impunity in Kashmir, without the fear of accountability, they carry such incidents sometimes just to for the sake of enjoyment.”

In addition, the Twitter user tweeted a video graphic. At the beginning of the video, a few people are seen rushing the boy to the hospital in an ambulance. At the 10 second time frame, it can be seen that the incident has caused mayhem and enraged the residents of Sopore. Furthermore, the Twitter user claimed in the tweet description that a 21-year-old boy had been killed, although the video’s subtitles suggest otherwise. According to the video, a 26-year-old boy was injured while installing the CCTV cameras.

Apart from that, in the video tweeted a women can be seen narrating the tragedy that transpired. Fact Check

We began our research by conducting a keyword search for “A boy killed in Kashmir while installing a CCTV camera” and came across a few Kashmir-based media reports. All of the reports had the similar headline: “Youth critically injured while installing CCTV camera.” None of the reports headline stated that the youth had been killed by the Indian Army.

Furthermore, we read through these media reports and discovered that the truth is not what the Twitter user is attempting to portray in order to malign the image of Indian Army. According to a report by The Kashmir Life which has the headline “Youth Critically Injured While Installing CCTV For Army, Family Protests Alleging Negligence,” the family members of a 26-year-old Danish Khazir, a resident of Sopore, told that on the Sunday afternoon of May 7, while Danish was working in a nearby complex outside the Army camp located near GDC Sopore, some Army personnel called him near the Army camp to install CCTV cameras.

The report further states that Danish’s family alleged that he was electrocuted as a result of Army personnel’s negligence when installing CCTV cameras since they did not stop the power supply. After that Danish was rushed to the hospital and from there he was referred to the Srinagar hospital. The Senior Superintendent of Police Sopore, Shabir Nawab, confirmed that the FIR has been registered against the Army personnel and investigation has been carried out.

Moreover, The Voice of Kashmir reported the same thing. It stated that a 26-year-old boy was gravely injured due to electrocution while installing CCTV cameras for a local army unit on Sunday. Danish’s family accused the Army of carelessness. No where in the both the reports it was stated that the boy was killed while installing the CCTV camera in the Army camp.

We then conducted a keyword search on YouTube and found a video by The Kashmiriyat. The video that the Twitter user tweeted was taken from The Kashmiriyat. We played the video, but there was no caption available. Our Only Fact contacted a multilingual expert to determine if the subtitles translation of the woman’s narration in the video tweeted matches the original video.

The expert confirmed that the translation of the subtitles in the video tweeted did not match the original video. At 12 seconds into the original video, the lady stated that Danish climbed the pole and was electrocuted. Because the original video lacks subtitles, the twitter user Kashmir narrative has added the misleading subtitles to make people believe that the youth was killed.

In the final part of our research, we conducted many keyword searches to determine after Danish was admitted in the hospital any development had taken place in this matter. With keyword search, we found the Greater Kashmir’s report titled “Youth dies of electric shock in north Kashmir’s Sopore.” According to the report a similar incident occurred in 2020, a 21-year-old man named Sajad Ahmad Kanwal was working on the roof of a Tehsil Road building. While working he came into touch with a live wire and died. It appeared to us that the Twitter user combined two incidents and sent out a misleading tweet.

Hence, all these points prove that the claim made by the Twitter user Kashmir narrative is misleading. Both events occurred in the Sopore area, with the latter occurring in 2020 and resulting in the death of a 21 year old boy. In the recent incident where a 26 year old boy was installing CCTV camera, he was only seriously injured and did not die.
