Claim of Yemen declaring war against Israel going Viral.

The relationship between Israel and Palestine has become increasingly tense following a violent attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which resulted in over 1400 casualties in Israel. Since the start of the war, extremist Islamists and propagandists have been spreading false information and misleading news to cover up Hamas’ horrible acts and blame Israel for the conflict. In their ongoing internet propaganda against Israel, radicals have turned to a deluge of fake news and disinformation. One piece of misleading information circulating is a claim that Yemen has declared war against Israel. A user named toufiqraza (Archived link) posted a tweet stating, “Today, Yemen became the first country since 1973 to declare war against Israel,” which has received 1.1k likes. The claim is being endorsed by many Islamist handles on the X platform (formerly known as Twitter). (Archived links 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)

Fake news peddler Kashif Arsalaan claimed that Yemen has officially entered the war. He posted that “Yemen’s official entry into the war. We cannot leave the Palestinians and Gaza’s people alone until the Israeli invasion of Gaza stops, then we will continue to attack Israel with ballistic missiles -Yemen’s official statement.”

Fact Check

We started our research by running a keyword search for “Yemen declared war on Israel,” and we discovered a few media publications clarifying that Yemen’s internationally recognized government has not declared war on Israel. No such official statement has come from the Yemen’s official government.

In truth, not Yemen’s official government, but a rebel group known as the Houthis, has declared war on Israel. According to ABC News, the Houthis, also known as the Ansarullah organisation, which is backed by Iran, have declared war on Israel. The Houthis are a Yemeni rebel group that has seized control of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, since 2014. It should be noted that the Yemeni government has no relation with this violent outfit. As a result, claiming that Yemen has declared war on Israel is false and misleading.

Furthermore, Yemen’s Houthi group claimed on October 31 to have launched an attack on southern Israel on Tuesday. The group claimed to have fired a “large batch” of ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones, at Israeli targets. The Israeli military stated it had foiled a number of “aerial threats,” but did not specify who was responsible.

The Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a televised statement that the group had launched a “large number” of ballistic missiles and drones towards Israel. He said there would be more such attacks to come “to help the Palestinians to victory”.

Hence, the claim that Yemen has declared war against Israel is Misleading.
