On the occasion of Ram Navami, many Shobha yatras were taken out by Hindus in various parts of India to commemorate the joyful occasion of Ram Navami. However, as is customary, Hindus were not let to celebrate their festival peacefully. Many locations like Vadodara, Howrah and Malwani where the Shobha yatra was taken out reported incidents of violence and stone pelting.
Moreover, while reading through the claims of different media outlets who are holding Hindus responsible for the violence, our team came across the report by anti-Hindu propaganda outlet The Wire. The Wire has cited 176 pages report “Routes of Wrath” by the former Supreme Court judge, Rohinton Fali Nariman.
In their report, they made several claims, portraying Muslims as victims of Hindu festival processions and Hindus as perpetrators of communal violence.
According to the report, the Hindu community under the guise of Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti procession targeted and attacked Muslims in 2022. Moreover, many states, including Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi, experienced Hindu-led unrest in which Muslims suffered casualties and huge losses.
Fact Check
As the report seemed one sided portraying Hindus as the perpetrators, we tried to find the other side of the story to know if Muslims were the only one who endured so many atrocities. The report “Routes of Wrath” begins by discussing the violence that occurred in Gujarat last year; we conducted a keyword search and found a few media accounts.
Khambhat violence, April, 2022:
Claim: In Khambhat, violence broke over loud music played in processions. While passing through the Muslim-dominated area, the Hindu group raised offensive and provocative slogans.
Fact: After going through the media reports and the police statement, we found the other side of the story, which has been very conveniently outlooked in Routes of Wrath.
Furthermore, as per the daily local Divya Bhaksar report, the stone-pelting and ensuing mayhem on Ram Navami yatra in Khambhat, were preplanned. The Maulvis planned the plot to disrupt the Ram Navami procession. The maulvis arranged for people from Bharuch and Ahmedabad to come to Khambhat and indulge in violence. Moreover, the involvement of Pakistan and Afghanistan was also suspected in this matter.
More than fifteen persons were injured in total, including more than five police officers, as a result of stone pelting. It killed a middle-aged Hindu man named Kanaiyalal Rana of Khambhat. The Islamists and leftists justified the Muslim side saying provocative music were played and slogans were raised.
In the video, after 20 seconds, Ajit Raijan, SP of Khambhat, can be heard saying that the conspiracy was pre-planned to instill fear in Hindus so that they would not take out the Shobha yatra the next time.
Lohardaga violence, April, 2022:
Claim: Hindus played the offensive music outside the mosque and people in the procession attacked Muslims.
Fact: In our fact-finding report, we discovered that the reality was far from the claim. When the procession led by Hindus was passing trough the Hirhi village, people from the Muslim community started pelted stones fiercely, but also attacked the people involved in the procession, injuring dozens.
Furthermore, many vehicles were vandalized and set on fire. The Hindus retaliated when they were attacked. The Routes of Wrath very conveniently used the incidents of retaliation by Hindus to portray them as the culprits.
Besides, according to a Times Now report, police officer Shamsul Ansari accused the Muslim community for inciting violence against Hindus. Surprisingly, one of the Hindu victims later disclosed that Ansari was already aware of the pre-planned attack on Hindus, but he did not notify the administration. According to police authorities, the attack on Hindus was pre-planned.
Moreover, around 15-16 people from the Hindu community were admitted to the hospital. Three of them had cuts in their throats with sharp-edged weapons and their condition was critical.
Additionally, as per India Today another incident reported from the Bokaro, Jharkhand, Hindu men were on their way to join a Ram Navami procession on a bike when a Muslim mob got into a fight with them and attacked them with stones.
Jahangirpuri violence, April, 2022:
Claim: On April 16, 2022, during the third and final rally on Hanuman Jayanti in 2022 passed through Jahangirpuri, Block C. The Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad turned to violence while attempting to hoist the saffron flag with Jai Shri Ram written on it inside the mosque. Despite the provocation from the Hindu end, Muslims maintained peace.
Fact: In our research, we found the statement of Delhi Commissioner, which debunks the false narrative set by the liberals about Bajrang dal trying to hoist saffron flag inside the mosque.
According to the statement given by Delhi Police Commissioner, Rakesh Asthana, no attempts were made from the Hindus end to hoist saffron flag at the Jahangirpuri mosque.
Moreover, according to the statement given by the inspector Rajiv Ranjan, on April 16, 2022 the Hindus were peacefully taking out the procession and when they reached the Jama masjid in Block C, one Muslim man Ansar along with his group started arguing with the Hindus which resulted in the stone pelting. Ansar had already pre planned the attack and provoked his associates to stop the procession and pelt stones at the crowd.
Ansar’s aide Md Aslam had opened fire at the police which injured the Delhi police sub inspector. Further, during the initial investigation, 14 people were arrested including Ansar, the mastermind behind the Jahangirpuri violence based on the CCTV footages. Over all 28 accused were arrested.
Further, we got access to the FIR copy filed in the Jahangirpuri violence. The FIR mentions that yatra was being carried out peacefully until it reach the Block C. Ansar, along with his associated started arguing with the people in the procession and disrupted it.
Khargone violence, April, 2022:
Claim: Hindus played offensive songs and raised provocative slogans which led to the stone pelting.
Fact: Using the keyword search, we came across a few videos from the violence site posted by Republic World portraying a different story. Several people can be seen in the footage on the terrace equipped with stones and pelting those stones at the procession. All of this indicates that the plot to attack the Hindu led rally was already planned.
According to the Routes of Wrath, only Hindus are to blame for all of the bloodshed that happened during the Ram Navami procession last year. They overlooked the acts of Muslims in the ensuing violence. The same was done in the Khargone violence.
Not only that, but according to OpIndia, Muslim rioters terrorized Hindu women, saying, “Where is your Ram?” Come out if he isn’t here. We’ve come to kidnap you. We’ll bring your Seeta Maiyas with us. We will abduct your daughters, sisters, and wives.” They also attacked the Sheetala Mata temple near Taalab chowk and the idols of Hindu dieties were broken.
The 24 Hindus were injured including the six police men. The SP of Khargone had suffered bullet injuries. On July 31, 2022, the main conspirator behind the Khargone violence, Samiullah Khan, was arrested for large-scale arson attacks during Ram Navami.
Hence, considering all of this, it is evident that the goal of Routes of Wrath was to sanitize Muslims actions in the Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti violence. They drew their majority of information from Hindu-phobic media outlets such as The Wire, Makhtoob, Sabrang, News Click, Quint, Scroll, and Article 14 which has a history of whitewashing the crimes committed by the Muslim community.
The Routes of Wrath used The Wire sources, and The Wire used the Routes of Wrath source to propagate their hate for Hindus. This is how the cycle operates in the left ecosystem against Hindus.
