By emphasizing the conspiracy theory of Bhagwa Love trap, they seek to overshadow and downplay the significant problem of love jihad that persists within certain communities.
On May 27, 2023, a Hindu-phobic Twitter handle named Amira Afreen shared a collage picture featuring a woman. The first image depicted her looking unharmed and in good spirits, while the second image revealed a shocking sight: the woman’s face bore severe injuries. Alongside the picture, Amira Afreen composed a sarcastic comment that read, “Her Ramlal was also not like that. He was a painter, what a painting! Many congratulations.” The intention behind this snide remark was to ridicule the woman’s claim that her Hindu partner was different from other Hindus who allegedly befriend Muslim women and later harm them.
A Twitter handle named Aafaque Faridi quote Amira Afreen’s tweet and wrote, “Those Muslim girls who are falling into the Bhagwa love trap, they are all experiencing this.” With this statement, Aafaque Faridi suggested that the depicted woman’s unfortunate situation is not an isolated incident but rather representative of the experiences faced by Muslim girls ensnared in what he referred to as the “Bhagwa love trap.”
Apart from this, Twitter handles named Md Sahil and Haque Minajul also made similar claims.

During our investigation into the viral picture shared by Amira Afreen, we decided to conduct a reverse image search. To our astonishment, we stumbled upon a report published by Sky News on April 21, 2018, featuring the same picture of the woman with the injured face. The report presented a completely different narrative than the viral claims, leaving us taken aback. According to this report, the woman in the picture was identified as Resham Khan, who, along with Jameel Muhktar, was targeted in a horrific acid attack. It was John Tomlin who had callously hurled sulphuric acid at them while they were in a car, shortly after Resham Khan’s 21st birthday celebration in East London.
The Sky News report further revealed that John Tomlin had pleaded guilty to two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. As a consequence, he received a prison sentence of 16 years, along with an extended license period of four years.
Next, we stumbled upon yet another report, this time by BBC News, published on April 20, 2018. To our surprise, this report also featured the same picture of the woman with the injured face as seen in the viral image. According to the BBC News report, the woman was identified as Resham Khan, who had been out celebrating her 21st birthday with Jameel Muhktar when they were subjected to a horrifying attack in Beckton, East London. The perpetrator of the attack was revealed to be John Tomlin. The report highlighted that John Tomlin had admitted to intentionally causing Resham Khan and Jameel Muhktar grievous bodily harm.
Moreover, continuing our investigation, we were able to obtain the Twitter account details of Resham Khan through the BBC News report. Intrigued by the opportunity to gain insight directly from the source, we delved into Resham Khan’s Twitter handle, which went by the name “resh.” As we scrolled through her timeline, we stumbled upon a powerful tweet that encapsulated her profound anger and disgust towards the post made by Amira Afreen. In the tweet, Resham Khan not only expressed her frustration but also quoted Amira Afreen’s original post, highlighting the fake claims and deceptive nature of the content. This discovery provided a crucial piece of evidence, underscoring Resham Khan’s own rejection and denunciation of the misinformation circulating about her.
Furthermore, this Tweet served as a testament to the resilience and integrity of Resham Khan, who had endured a traumatizing acid attack and now had to contend with the additional burden of false narratives being propagated about her ordeal.
Hence, all these points prove that the woman in the viral picture with the injured face is not the victim of Bhagwa Love Trap as claimed by some social media handlers. Instead, the woman in the viral picture has been identified as Resham Khan, who, tragically, was a victim of an acid attack perpetrated by John Tomlin six years ago in June 2017.
