In March, an explosion rocked Rameshwaram Cafe, a dining establishment situated in Bangalore, Karnataka. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has initiated efforts to capture Islamist militants believed to be responsible for the blast. Meanwhile, social media is abuzz with assertions that recently, a Hindu individual in Sambalpur, Odisha, perpetrated a bombing, labelling it as a terrorist act. Moreover, Islamists on social media are also questioning media fairness, implying a reluctance to cover the incident due to the suspect’s Hindu identity.

Meer Faisal tweeted, ‘Sambalpur bomb blast accused Avinash Mishra has been arrested by Sambalpur police. Three people were injured in the incident. It was a terrorist attack, yet no national media outlet reported on it because the accused was a Hindu.’

Radical Islamist Md Asif Khan tweeted while quoting Faisal’s tweet, ‘Where is Indian Media? Why is no one talking about this bomb blast? Isn’t it a terror attack?’

Leftist X handle Drunk Journalist commented while quoting Meer Faisal’s tweet, ‘This is no different from the Rameshwaram blast but this won’t be called a Terrorist attack nor the media would show this as news.’

Islamist Shahnawaz Ansari wrote on X, ‘Police has arrested the terrorist “Avinash Mishra” who carried out the bomb attack outside the mosque in Sambalpur, Orissa. Three Muslim youth were seriously injured in this terrorist attack. It is surprising that the news of this terrorist attack is completely missing from the national media.’

Serial fake news peddler and Radical Islamist Ali Sohrab tweeted, ‘Orissa: “Avinash Mishra” who blasted bomb outside Sambalpur mosque arrested, three Muslims were badly injured in the incident. It was a terrorist attack, yet the national media did not report on it because the bomb blast accused (Mishra) is a Hindu!’

Extremist Amina Kausar wrote, ‘Avinash Mishra, suspect in Sambalpur bomb blast, arrested. Despite being a Hindutva terrorist attack, national media is still silent only because the culprit is from Hindu community.’

Anti India and Anti Hindu X handle, Crime Reports India tweeted, ‘Odisha: Sambalpur Mosque Ramadan  bomb blast accused Avinash Mishra has been arrested by Sambalpur police. Three people were injured in the incident. It was a terrorist attack, yet no national media outlet reported on it because the accused was a Hindu.’

Fact Check

Our investigation began by examining pertinent media sources, leading us to an article published by The New Indian Express. According to a report published on March 28, 2024, a bomb was reportedly thrown near a mosque at Peer Baba Chowk in Sambalpur, resulting in the arrest of a 19-year-old individual named Abhilash Mishra. Inspector General (Northern Range) Himanshu Lal stated that following an inquiry, it was determined to be a case of personal vengeance, devoid of any communal angle. Further investigation revealed that Mishra had a personal dispute with Sushil Paika, a member of the ‘SBP Mafia Gang’ Instagram page, who had allegedly previously assaulted Mishra’s father. Seeking retribution, Mishra plotted to implicate Paika in the bombing incident, even affixing a sticker of the ‘SBP Mafia Gang’ onto the bomb.

Furthermore, a report from ‘One India,’ published on March 28, provided details on an incident in Sambalpur, Odisha, occurring on March 26, where three individuals sustained injuries in a crude bomb assault. However, they are currently in stable condition. ‘One India’ clarified that authorities confirmed the violence stemmed from personal vendetta rather than communal discord. The suspect’s motive was identified as seeking retaliation for an attack on his father.

Additionally, we contacted Sambalpur SP Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo for additional insights. According to Bhamoo, Abhilash Mishra, a student of ITI, was involved in a prior altercation with Sushil Paika, leading to Mishra orchestrating the incident to incriminate Sushil. A thorough investigation confirmed that this event did not constitute a terrorist attack in any capacity.

Regarding the distinction between the blasts in Bangalore and Odisha, it’s crucial to note that while a crude bomb was employed in Sambalpur, Odisha, an IED was utilized in the blast at Bangalore’s Rameshwaram Cafe. The primary disparity between a crude bomb and an IED lies in their construction. A crude bomb is typically assembled in a basic, makeshift manner using household items such as petrol, firecrackers, and matchstick powder, reflecting a lack of sophistication and expertise. Conversely, an IED is crafted with greater precision and complexity, incorporating electronic components and sensitive sensors, indicating a higher level of expertise and training.

To summarize, the detonation of a crude bomb in Sambalpur, Odisha, stemmed from a personal feud between individuals, devoid of any communal implications. It’s worth noting that Islamist factions are disseminating false information on social media to tarnish the reputation of the Hindu community.
