A claim is going viral on social media about the the Ram Janaki Math. A notorious handle named Divya Kumaari has shared a video on X. In the video, a girl is seen standing in front of a temple and claiming that there is a room in the temple where girls of class 8th and 9th are paid to stay in the room for 2-3 hours to indulge in immoral activities. With this video, the handle has claimed that the priest of this temple has converted the temple into an OYO hotel room where he used to hire school girls for rape by giving them money. Fact Check
At the start of our research, we took keywords from the text shown in the video and conducted a Google search, but found no reports.
Next, by extracting the keyframes from the video, we did a reverse image search and found a post by a Facebook handle named Sikandar Ali. Here we found visuals of the same temple that is seen in the claimed post. A banner is also visible in the video which says ‘Ram Janaki Math‘.
In this video, a journalist can be heard saying that this is Ram Janaki Math, where the priest lured a 5-year-old girl with chocolates, took her to a room and raped her.
Taking hints from here, we conducted a keyword search ‘Rape in Ram Janaki Math’ on Google and found a report by Dainik Bhaskar, which features the same keyframe as visible in the claimed post.
In the report of Dainik Bhaskar, we found that Ram Janaki Math is a historic Buddhist Math located in Paliganj, Patna. During the Janmashtami festival organized in this Math, the secretary of the management committee Suresh Kashyap was accused of luring two minor girls with chocolates and taking them to the top of the Math. When the mother of the girls searched for them, she found that Suresh was showing obscene videos to the girls on his mobile. When the mother protested, the alleged accused fled from the spot. The complaint was filed and Suresh was arrested.
However, the alleged accused, Suresh, has denied the allegations. He said in a Facebook post that the complainant’s family is accused of murdering the Math’s priest, Shiv Tiwari, in 2013. According to him, the murder took place due to a dispute over the Math’s land. He claims that a conspiracy is being hatched against him and that he is being falsely implicated in connection with same land dispute case. He was running a campaign to free the Math’s land from the encroachment.
After this, we were able to contact Swami Kamalanayanacharya, a member of the Math committee. While speaking to us, he clarified that the arrested person is not a priest but the secretary of the Math and he is being falsely implicated in this case. He further said that the Math has over 11000 bighas of land and some portions have been encroached upon illegally. Suresh Kashyap was fighting a case in the court over the matter. According to him, due to the ongoing case, he is being falsely accused.
Further, we found a news video of Navbharat Times dated December 17, 2020. In the video, at 1:58 minutes, secretary Suresh Kashyap is seen where he says that this place is a historic Buddhist Math built by the Palavanshi kings. Hundreds of acres of the monastery’s land have been illegally encroached not only by criminals but also by the government, which has encroached six bighas of land. Suresh is also mentioned as a member of the Math management committee in the video.
In conclusion, the claim that the priest of Ram Janaki Math has been arrested over rape allegation of a minor girl is misleading.
