Image From Oct 2023 Falsely Shared to Claim Hamas Attacked Israel Post Ceasefire With Iran

An image showing a city engulfed in large flames is being circulated with a claim that after the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, Hamas has started attacking Israel again. Sharing the image, the handle Nazneen Akhtar wrote, “Now that the war with Iran is over, Hamas has started attacking Israel again. It seems like Hamas is trying to take revenge for everything, past and present. Whatever few cities are left in Israel, Hamas won’t stop until it destroys them too.” (archived link)

During our fact-check research, we did a reverse image search and found a report by Business Today dated November 14, 2023. This report was published amidst rising tensions between Israel and Hamas after Hamas’s surprise attack in October 2023, which led to a massive war. The same image appeared in this report.

We found another report by Indian Today dated October 21, 2023 where we found the same image. The caption of the image says “Smoke and flames billow from targets hit in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza City, Oct. 10 (Photo: AP).” The image was taken on October 10, 2023 by Associate Press when a city in Gaza was struck by Israel’s air strike.

In conclusion, the image showing a city engulfed in smoke and flames is from October 10, 2023, when Israeli struck a city in Gaza following an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7. The claim that this image shows attack on Israel by Hamas after ceasefire between Israel and Iran is false.
