A tragic aircraft crash accident occurred in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on 12 June 2025. Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, en route to London Gatwick, with 230 passengers and 12 crew members aboard took off from the Ahmedabad Airport. But within a couple of seconds of takeoff, it stalled and went down, resulting in the aircraft crashing into a hostel at B.J. Medical College, Meghaninagar. In this Boeing 787 plane crash accident, 241 onboard deaths occurred, and just a single passenger by the name of Vishwash Kumar Ramesh who is British Indian survived miraculously. The aircraft crashed into the medical college hostel, which resulted in 38 additional deaths of college students and employees, and 60+ ground injuries. This is the most fatal Boeing 787 crash so far.
After the tragic accident, India’s AAIB along with the US NTSB, FAA, UK AAIB, Boeing and GE Aerospace launched a joint investigation which is underway. Since the aircraft had struck the hostel and residential quarters of B.J. Medical College, the doctors have vacated their quarters along with their families as the area has become unsafe for habitation.
Meanwhile, a video of Dr. Anil Panwar, Assistant professor at the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, which is affiliated with BJ Medical College, speaking to the media is going viral on social media. In this video, Dr. Anil is pleading with the authorities to give him and his wife at least two days to vacate the flat. His daughter and the family’s maid were also injured in the accident and are currently undergoing treatment. They cannot vacate the flat overnight so they should be given some time. His video is being circulated on social media with the claim that he is being harassed by the administration who are forcefully asking him to vacate the flat.
Sharing the video, the handle Pankhuri Pathak wrote, “How ruthless has the government become? Dr Anil and his wife are assistant professors in a medical college in Ahmedabad. Their house has been destroyed in the plane crash. Their little daughter and maid are admitted in the hospital. There are bodies of many doctors around them. In such a situation, instead of providing them assistance, the government is giving them an ultimatum to vacate the house. They are crying and begging for two days time. The girl is in the hospital, so how can they immediately pack up whatever is left at home and leave? Do developed countries, sensitive countries, treat their people, the victims, like this?” (archived link)

Tanmoy asserted, “Dr. Anil and his doctor wife were saving lives at the hospital when a plane crashed into their home, leaving their daughter and maid critically injured and hospitalized. Now, the Gujarat #BJP government is ruthlessly demanding they vacate their shattered house within a day for the crash investigation. Dr. Anil begs for just two days to care for his family, but authorities turn a deaf ear. Why can’t the government relocate them to safety? What’s their fault in this tragedy? How can anyone justify such cruelty to a family already broken by loss?” (archived link)

Fact check
During our fact-check research into Dr. Anil’s case, we found a video on the YouTube channel News Capital Gujarat, in which he gave a clarification statement. In the video, Dr. Anil says, “I am Dr. Anil Panwar. For the past two days, I have been mentally very disturbed, and because of that, I said many things without even knowing what I meant, but that’s not the case. The administration, police, and hospital have helped us a lot. A flat was also allotted to my wife, but there was a lack of communication between me and my wife regarding it. All our belongings were shifted there with the help of administration and volunteers, for which I express my gratitude. The hospital and the government have supported us significantly.”
Through this video, we received a recent update based on the statement given by Dr. Anil. His clarification revealed that his daughter and their maid were also injured in the tragic plane crash incident which crashed into the medical college injuring students and staffs. They are currently undergoing treatment in the hospital. Since his daughter and maid were injured in this tragic accident, he was mentally distressed and not in a stable mindset.
Both Anil and his wife are assistant professors at the U.N. Mehta Institute and she was also allotted a flat. But in the tense environment, there was a lack of communication between him and his wife, and he was not aware that their belongings had been shifted to the second flat with the help of volunteers.
In addition, we also found the official allotment letter dated June 13, 2025, for Dr. Anil’s wife, Chanchal Bhandari. According to this letter, under the Residential Accommodation Allotment Committee (RAAC), Dr. Chanchal has been allotted civil hospital staff quarters on Meghaninagar Road, opposite Tata Nagar.

Apart from this, we also found out that Dr. Anil was allotted government quarter 406 on May 1, 2022, and yesterday he was shifted from here to another government quarter. It is not true that the authorities forced him to vacate his accommodation. In fact, both he and his wife were allotted another accommodation, and the authorities along with volunteers also helped in shifting their belongings. Staff members were evacuated on an immediate basis because the plane crash was so intense that living in those residential quarters had become unsafe.

In Dr. Anil’s case, selective facts have been shared on social media, along with misleading claims that even in a tragic and sad situation like this, a doctor is being harassed by forcefully being asked to vacate his accommodation. But the reality is that in the given stressful condition, Dr. Anil was distressed and unaware that his wife had been allotted a flat and their stuff had already been shifted there. This was because there was no communication between him and his wife regarding this. So, while making statements to the media, he requested the authorities to give him some time for evacuating since his maid and daughter were undergoing treatment in hospital, and he wanted to be present there. In an attempt to take the matter online, selective facts with misleading claims were shared. During such a crisis situation, the spread of such misleading facts can divert people’s attention from relief efforts.
