PM Modi invited to 2025 G7 Summit by Canadian PM Mark Carney despite diplomatic tensions

The 2025 G7 Summit will be held from June 15 to 17, 2025, in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. The summit is being hosted by the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney. Other leaders of nations France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the European Union, will participate in this summit. Even though India is not a G7 member, it is frequently invited to the event. However, following the announcement of the summit for this year, reports went viral on social media stating that Canada did not invite Prime Minister Modi to the summit because of the frosty diplomatic relations between India and Canada after the murder of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023.

Sharing the claim, Jairam Ramesh wrote, “The G7 Summit of the Presidents of the USA and France, the Prime Ministers of UK, Japan, Italy, and Canada and the Chancellor of Germany is taking place in Kananaskis in Alberta, Canada, from 15 June 2025. The Presidents of Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and Ukraine and the Prime Minister of Australia have also been invited to the summit. Before 2014, G7 was actually G8 for many years and had included Russia. Dr. Manmohan Singh would be invited for G8 Summits where his voice would be heard. It was at one such summit in Germany in June 2007 where the famous Singh-Merkel formula for climate change negotiations had been unveiled. The tradition of inviting Indian PMs continued after 2014. But now, for the first time in 6 years, Vishwaguru will not be in attendance at the Canada summit. Whatever spin may be given, the fact remains that this is yet another big diplomatic bungle – after the blunder of allowing the US to overturn decades of Indian foreign policy by mediating between India and Pakistan and allowing American authorities to call for continued talks at a neutral site.” (Archived link)

Swati Chaturvedi asserted, “As I first reported @thetribunechd confirms that Modi did not receive an invite for the G 7 from Canada. First time Modi will skip the grouping since 2019.” (Archived link)

Cadre Congress claimed, “For the first time in 6 years Modi will not attend the G7 summit in Canada because he is not invited. Canada has confirmed they didn’t invite our PM. Crores of taxpayers ₹ funding our ministers tours, all for nothing!?” (Archived link)

Jawhar Sircar stated, “This is the first time, Modi is not invited to join the G7 meeting — though Australia, Brazil, S Africa and even Ukraine are invited.” (Archived link)

Ranvijay Singh wrote, “How did Canada dare not invite Modiji to the G7 summit? Modi ji has been going to G7 for the last 6 years. This was done very wrongly. We should boycott Canada.” (Archived link)

The same claim was also made by other handles like Shantanu (Archived link), Veena Jain (Archived link), PunsterX (Archived link), and Surbhi (Archived link).

Fact check

In our fact-checking research, we came across a post made by Prime Minister Modi on his X account, where he confirmed his attendance at the upcoming G7 Summit hosted by Canada.

PM Modi stated in his post, “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

Apart from that, upon further research using related keywords, we found a report by The Guardian titled, ‘Canada’s PM faces backlash for inviting India’s Narendra Modi to G7 summit. The report states that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has defended his decision to invite Narendra Modi to the upcoming summit in Alberta. The invitation has stirred controversy because Canada’s federal police believe that the Indian government was behind the killing of Sikh extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in 2023.

Despite these accusations, Carney stood by his decision to invite Modi to the upcoming summit, stating that India is the fifth-largest economy in the world, and it was important to invite the country’s leader despite the strained tensions between India and Canada.

After that, we found a video of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney explaining his reason to invite India to the upcoming summit during a press conference. In the video, posted by the Associated Press, around the 20-minute mark, a journalist asked Carne, “Last year, the RCMP said that the Modi government is orchestrating a campaign of violence and intimidation in Canada that includes murder. Why are you inviting him to the G7?”

To this, Carney responded by saying that, “Canada is in the role of the G7 chair, and in those discussions, as agreed with our G7 colleagues, include important discussions in energy security, digital future, and critical minerals, amongst other, and partnership actually in building infrastructure in the emerging and developing world. There are certain countries that should be at the table for those discussion. India is the largest economy in the world and effectively the most populous country in the world, and central to a number of those supply chains, at the heart of number of supply chains, so it makes sense. In addition, bilaterally, we have now agreed, importantly, to continue law enforcement-to-law enforcement dialogue. So, there’s been some progress on that, recognises issues of accountability. I extended the invitation to Prime Minister Modi for in that context, and he has accepted.” Carney defended his decision and explained why it is important to invite India to participate in these strategic conversations, even if there are tensions.

In conclusion, claims suggesting that Prime Minister Modi was not invited to the upcoming G7 Summit, hosted under the leadership of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, are false. Carney extended an invitation to the Indian PM despite the strained diplomatic relationship between India and Canada following the murder of Sikh extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Amidst the outrage over the invitation to Modi, Carney defended his decision by stating that India is one of the largest economies in the world; therefore, it is important to include its leader in strategic discussions.
