Indian opposition parties and left-leaning groups never miss an opportunity to celebrate when Indian businesses face setbacks or losses. Ironically, these same parties, which have named their coalition “India,” often display a sadistic attitude whenever reports emerge of Indian business deals falling through. A case in point is the recent news circulating in Sri Lankan media, claiming that Sri Lanka has reportedly decided to revoke the wind power project awarded to the Adani Group last year. This report quickly caught the attention of Congress, with official party accounts sharing the news with barely concealed glee and criticizing the Modi government for its association with the Adani Group.

Congress claimed, ‘Narendra Modi’s ‘best friend’ Adani has suffered a major setback in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has cancelled the deal to purchase electricity worth billions of rupees with Adani. The Sri Lankan government has taken this decision in view of the corruption allegations against Adani. Today the whole world is understanding Adani’s game of corruption. America, Kenya, Australia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka… Adani is being opposed everywhere. In many countries it was clearly stated that Adani is highly corrupt. An investigation was launched against Adani and even the deal was cancelled. But in India • There is no investigation on Adani • No questions are being asked from Adani • Adani is being provided deal after deal • Adani is being given government land worth billions • Every trick is being used to benefit Adani It is clear- No matter what the world says, Narendra Modi will not let any harm come to his corrupt friend.’

Ravi Nair asserted, ‘Adani Group loses big Sri Lanka contract as power purchase deal is revoked amid corruption allegations.’

Meera Srinivasan stated, ‘SriLanka revokes power purchasing deal with Adani, say reports.’

Economic Times, Business Standard, Chekrishnack, and Indian Youth Congress also shared the news.

Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by reviewing the official website of the Adani Group. In a press release, the group stated:

“Reports that Adani’s 484 MW wind power projects in Mannar and Pooneryn have been cancelled are false and misleading. We categorically confirm that the project has not been cancelled. The Sri Lankan Cabinet’s decision on January 2, 2025, to reevaluate the tariff approved in May 2024 is part of a standard review process, particularly with a new government in place, to ensure the terms align with their current priorities and energy policies. Adani remains fully committed to investing $1 billion in Sri Lanka’s green energy sector, contributing to renewable energy advancement and economic growth.”

The Adani Group has clarified that the Sri Lankan government’s recent decision to review the project’s tariff (pricing) is a routine process, especially with a new government in power. This review ensures that the terms of the project fit the government’s current goals and energy policies. Adani also reassured its commitment to investing $1 billion in Sri Lanka’s green energy sector, aiming to boost renewable energy development and economic growth in the country.

Therefore, the claim that the Sri Lankan government has revoked Adani’s wind power projects in Mannar and Pooneryn is entirely false and baseless.

The widespread media coverage of this unverified news, coupled with opposition parties reveling in it, highlights two critical issues:

1. The power of such ecosystems to quickly turn unsubstantiated claims into perceived truths.

2. The deliberate targeting of the Adani Group, which ultimately undermines India’s economic interests.

This type of fake news not only erodes trust among shareholders and investors but also damages the country’s reputation and economic prospects as a whole.
