The news making rounds on social media claims that a Dalit boy in Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, committed suicide after being stripped, brutally beaten, urinated upon, and filmed. The incident is being shared with a caste angle, alleging that the boy took his life due to the police’s inaction.

Leftist journalist Rana Ayyub shared the screenshot of India Today report wrote, “But caste.”

In our fact-check report, we found a report published by ABP News. According to the report, the incident occurred in Koilpura village, in the Kaptanganj police station area of Basti district, where a 17-year-old boy committed suicide by hanging himself. The deceased’s family members stated that he was lured under the pretext of a birthday party, where he was molested and beaten. The boy was brutally beaten, urinated upon his face, and subjected to vile acts. A video of the entire incident was recorded. Following this, the accused began threatening to make the video viral, which led the boy to take this horrifying step.

After this, with the help of a local journalist, we spoke to the head (Pradhan) of Koilpura village, Siyaram Chaudhary. The Pradhan stated that there are four accused in this incident, including a teenager, and that both the deceased and the accused belong to the same caste. Through the village head, we contacted the deceased’s family members. The deceased’s maternal uncle, Vijay Kumar, told us in the conversation that his nephew had gone to a birthday party, where he was treated inhumanely. Later, the police did not take any action on the matter, due to which the boy took his life. He clarified that there was no caste issue in this case, as both parties are Dalits.

Apart from this, we also found a statement from SP Gopalkrishna Chaudhary, in which he stated that a case has been registered in connection with the incident, and four people have been arrested. He also mentioned that both parties are from the same community. Additionally, the Kaptanganj SHO has been suspended on charges of failing to take action.

In conclusion, the claim of caste angle in the suicide of a 17-year-old boy in Basti is misleading, as the deceased and the accused belonged to the same community.
