On December 17, during the winter session of Parliament, Home Minister Amit Shah delivered an address in the Rajya Sabha at the conclusion of the two-day discussion on the completion of 75 years of the Constitution, during which he criticized the Congress party. A part of his speech is being circulated on social media with claims that Shah insulted Baba Saheb Ambedkar. In the viral clip, Amit Shah is heard saying, “Now it has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If you had taken God’s name this many times, you would have attained heaven.”

Supriya Shrinate wrote, “Now it has become fashionable to chant the name of Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If you had taken God’s name this much, you would have attained heaven: Amit Shah This insult to Baba Saheb can only be done by a person who hates his constitution And whose forefathers had burnt the effigies of Babasaheb, the messiah of the oppressed and the deprived After all why do these Sanghis have so much trouble and hatred even with the name of Babasaheb?”

INC asserted, “Now it has become a fashion- Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If you take the name of God this much, you would attain heaven for seven lives.” Amit Shah has said something very disgusting. This shows that the BJP and RSS leaders have a lot of hatred for Baba Saheb Ambedkar. The hatred is such that they are even irritated by his name. These are the same people whose ancestors used to burn the effigies of Baba Saheb, who themselves used to talk about changing the constitution given by Baba Saheb. When the public taught them a lesson, now they have become irritated with those who take the name of Baba Saheb. Shameful! Amit Shah should apologize to the country for this.”

Arvind Kejriwal wrote, “See how Amit Shah is making fun of Baba Saheb Ambedkar in the Parliament. These BJP people have become so arrogant that they don’t consider anyone as anything. Yes Amit Shah ji. Baba Saheb is no less than God for every child of this country. I don’t know about heaven after death, but if Baba Saheb’s constitution was not there, you people would not have allowed the oppressed, downtrodden, poor and Dalits to live on this earth. Insult to Baba Saheb India will not tolerate this. Jai Bheem.”

Fact Check

To know the truth behind the viral clip, we listened to the speech of Home Minister Amit Shah broadcast on Sansad TV on December 17. It was found that the viral clip is edited and pulled out of context. In the complete video, at the time frame of 1:07:51 minutes, Shah remarked, “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If they had taken God’s name this many times, they might have found a place in heaven.”

He further added, “It is a good thing to take Ambedkar’s name, and we are happy that they do so. You can take his name 100 times, but beyond that, it is important to reflect on what you truly feel about him. Let me explain why Ambedkar ji resigned from the first cabinet. Ambedkar ji himself expressed on several occasions that he was dissatisfied with the discrimination faced by SC/ST communities. He was also unhappy with the government’s foreign policy and disagreed with Article 370. Despite assurances from the then Prime Minister, these issues were not addressed, which compelled Ambedkar ji to resign from the cabinet.”

Shah further stated: Dr. B.C. Roy wrote a letter to Nehru, asking, “Won’t the resignation of two great personalities like Rajaji and Ambedkar from the cabinet cause harm?” To this, Nehru replied, “The departure of Rajaji might cause some harm, but Ambedkar’s departure will cause no harm.”
