Fact Check

At the start of our fact-checking research, we did a keyword search on YouTube and found a longer version of Yogi Adityanath’s rally speech in Mahoba two days ago. The video has been uploaded by NBT UP-Uttarakhand with the title ‘CM Yogi Mahoba Rally: हमीरपुर में BJP लगाएगी जीत की हैट्रिक?, UP के महोबा से CM योगी.’

In the longer version of the video from 22:40 minutes, Yogi Adityanath is heard taking aim at the Congress and the Samajwadi Party. He then moves on to enumerate the achievements of the Modi government in the last 10 years in tackling terrorism and Naxalism, ensuring border security and abrogating Article 370 in Kashmir. He further adds, “Major development work has been done: highways, railways, expressways, IITs, IIMs and a district-one medical college. Here too, we are fast-tracking the process of setting up a medical college. Whether it is about the triple IT, NIT, world-class universities, tap water scheme for every house or providing facilities to the poor, progress is being made rapidly.”

Yogi further says, “During the Samajwadi Party’s time, the poor were starving. Today, 80 crore poor people are benefiting from free ration facilities. And what is the population of Pakistan? 23-24 crore. Modi ji has lifted 25 crore people out of poverty, enabling them to lead a prosperous life. In the past 10 years, more people have been lifted out of poverty in our country than the entire population of Pakistan.”

He continues by saying, “You must be seeing the daily protests in Pakistan. People are fighting over a kilogram of flour. This kind of grabbing and snatching is happening in Pakistan. Tell those who are singing praises of Pakistan, if you love Pakistan so much, why are you becoming a burden on India? Go to Pakistan and beg there with a bowl.” It was here when Yogi made the same remark which is heard in the viral clip.

At 25 minutes he says, “Congress and Indian alliance are threatening, don’t speak against Pakistan, they have atom bomb”. Here CM Yogi did not mention Muslims and reservations anywhere. Instead, he was targeting Congress and the Samajwadi Party with his comment, “Go to Pakistan and beg with a bowl there.”

Furthermore, at 31:48 minutes in the video, CM Yogi again takes a dig at the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, saying, “They say that Muslims should be given all the reservations. Where will our backward class people go?”

It was found that both comments were made at different time frames and have been presented together to suggest that Yogi Adityanath was telling Muslims who seek reservations to go to Pakistan and beg there. However, the remark “Go to Pakistan and beg with a bowl there” has no relevance to his comment on Muslim reservations. This remark was directed at Congress and the Samajwadi Party.
