In our today’s fact-checking analysis, we aim to debunk the blatant and fictious lies surrounding the claim that members of the PM Narendra Modi’s extended family have benefited financially from his position.

Fact Check

Sombhai Modi

In order to verify the aforementioned claim about Sombhai Modi, we did a keyword search and came across the Stars Unfolded website. Established in 2013, this website is recognized for providing accurate details about prominent Indian personalities.

According to the data available here, PM Narendra Modi’s eldest brother Sombhai Modi was earlier working in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. At the age of 18, he passed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) recruitment exam and joined the health department. In the years 1999 and 2001, he established Sarvodaya Seva Trust and Old Age Home. Currently retired, he is involved in running an old age home in Vadnagar in Gujarat. However, there is no mention on the website of him heading any recruitment board in Gujarat.

Hence, the claim of Sombhai Modi heading the recruitment board in Gujarat is unfounded as the tweet does not mention which recruitment board he heads. However, we ran a Google keyword search ‘Recruitment Board Gujarat’, which led us to the websites of Lokrakshak Recruitment Board, Railway Recruitment Board and Gujarat Education Recruitment Board. However, his name does not appear on any website.

Amrutbhai Modi

According to the claim, Amritbhai Modi used to work in a private factory but now he owns real estate in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

According to a Times of India article, Amrutbhai, who currently lives with his son Sanjay and his family in Ghatlodia Colony, Ahmedabad, had indeed retired as a fitter from a private company in 2005. Moreover, as per the Financial Express article, he is making a salary of less than Rs 10,000. However, in our research, we could not find any sources that corroborate the claim that he owns real estate.

Additionally, we also searched for ‘top real estate in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar‘ but none of the websites has Amrutbhai Modi’s name featured on it.

Prahalad Modi

While the claim mentions that Prahalad Modi owns a Hyundai, Maruti and Honda four-wheeler showrooms in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, the Financial Express article about the family members of PM Modi, mentions that is fair price shop owner and president of the Gujarat State Fair Price Owner’s Association. He is also the vice president of the 2001-founded All India Fair Price Shop Dealer’s Federation (AIFPSDF).

Our fact check also revealed that Prahaladbhai is also known to oppose government policies that have been instituted by his own brother Narendra Modi. According to NDTV, in 2015, AIFPSDF vice-president Prahaladbhai along with several other AIFPSDF members led a protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. During his speech, he said that if the demands of his association were not accepted, BJP would lose in the UP and Bihar assembly elections. In 2022, he along with AIFPSDF members led another protest against his brother’s government at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

Furthermore, his claim of owning Hyundai, Maruti and Honda four-wheeler showrooms is false and baseless as there is no authentic source to support this claim.

Pankaj Modi

Contrary to the claim about Pankaj Modi, the youngest brother of PM Narendra Modi, who worked with Sombhai as the Vice President in the recruitment board (again not specified) in Gujarat, he is currently a senior officer in the Information Department of the Government of Gujarat. Therefore, claim about him working with Sombhai as Vice President in the Recruitment Board in Gujarat turned out to be false as his name does not appear on the above mentioned websites.

Bhogilal Modi

The claim about Bhogilal Modi of owning Reliance Malls in Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara is vague because, according to the Economic Times article, Reliance does not have a franchise or dealership system. Reliance Mall is completely owned by the Ambani family and has no other owners. Apart from this, very little information is available about Bhogilal Modi.

Arvind Modi

According to the tweet’s claim, Arvind Modi transitioned from being a scrap dealer to a steel contractor, working with prominent construction firms. However, there is a lack of media reports to substantiate this claim.

Bharat Modi

If we go by the claim, Bharat Modi, who used to work at a petrol pump, currently has five petrol pumps in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar under the name Agiaras. However, no such petrol pump exists on Google Map.

Ashok Modi

Even the claim about Ashok Modi, who owned a kite and grocery shop and is now business partners with Bhogilal Modi, who owns Reliance Mall, turned out to be false.

According to a Times of India article, Ashokbhai cooks khichdi at a Sevashram in Vadnagar and his wife washes utensils. During festive season they sell kites and firecrackers.

Chandrakant Bhai Modi

Chandrakant bhai is works as a helper at a charitable gaushala in Ahmedabad. So, the claim about him owning a nine big milk production and milk processing centers in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar is also false.

Ramesh Modi

The tweet claims that Ramesh Modi used to work as a school teacher but at present owns five schools and three engineering, ayurvedic, homeopathy, physiotherapy colleges and a medical college. However, the name and location of the schools and colleges owned by him is not mentioned. Hence, the claim remains unfounded.

We tried to find information about Bhargav Modi and Bipin Modi but there is no information available about them which suggests the possibility that like all claims, the claims about them are also false.

Conclusion: The claim that PM Narendra Modi’s family benefits from his position for personal gain is false and baseless. None of his family members take advantage of potential benefits associated with the Prime Minister’s status. They lead simple and private lives, with some struggling to even make end meets.
