On May 11, 2023, social media platforms were abuzz with a disturbing picture that captured the heart-wrenching aftermath of what appeared to be a tragic accident. The photograph depicted a distraught man crying beside an unconscious woman, suggesting that she had been involved in an incident. However, the situation took a twist when Rajkumar Bhati, a prominent SP (Samajwadi Party) leader, shared the image along with a disturbing narrative. According to Bhati, the woman in the picture was Sanjeeda Begum, the mother of Rashid Siddiqui, a dedicated SP activist. Bhati alleged that Sanjeeda Begum was initially stopped by the police under the pretext of ID verification. As a small crowd gathered, an unnecessary lathi charge ensued, prompting Sanjeeda to flee in fear. Tragically, during her attempt to escape, she was struck by a passing vehicle and died on the spot.

Another Twitter handle named “The Samajwadi Show” shared the viral picture and declared that the depicted incident was not an accident but a deliberate act of murder.

Fact Check

The spread of news about the alleged death of the mother of SP activist in Uttar Pradesh had caused widespread outrage and shock on social media. However, the reality of the incident was quite different from what was being portrayed by the Samajwadi party leaders and its supporters. In fact, the official handle of the Police Commissionerate Gautam Buddh Nagar had to intervene and debunk the fake news that was being spread on social media. The police clarified that the viral claims are false and misleading, and that no such incident of death had taken place.

In response to the flurry of social media posts and claims surrounding the viral image, the Gautam Buddh Nagar police took to Twitter to provide their official account of the incident. According to their statements, on May 11, 2023, a tragic event unfolded near Mihir Bhoj Inter College in Thana Dadri. As per their investigation, a woman was crossing the road divider when an unfortunate collision occurred involving a roadways bus. The impact left the woman injured, necessitating immediate medical attention. She was promptly rushed to the hospital and is currently in critical condition, relying on a ventilator for respiratory support.

Taking swift action, the police seized the bus on the spot and apprehended the driver, who is now in custody. They emphasized that legal measures are underway to address the matter appropriately. Furthermore, it was clarified that the police presence at the scene ensured peace and order during the incident.

In a firm stance against the propagation of misleading information on social media, the Gautam Buddh Nagar police asserted that they are taking legal action against those who spread such baseless rumors.

Next, we did a keyword research with the words, old woman hit by bus in UP’s dadri. During this, we stumbled upon a report published by the Times of India on May 11, 2023. In the report, Vandita Shrivastava, the ADM Finance and deputy district election officer, vehemently dismissed the allegations of a lathi charge. She stated, “The woman was crossing the road and she was hit by the bus. There was no lathi charge.” The report further revealed that the police confirmed the arrest of the bus driver.

To substantiate the claims made by the official handle of Police Commissionerate Gautam Buddh Nagar, our OFI team sought further verification directly from the police. The police emphatically stated that the assertions made by numerous users regarding the tragic death of the Samajwadi Party activist’s mother are unequivocally false. In a definitive clarification, the police confirmed that the woman involved in the incident is not deceased, contrary to the alarming claims. Instead, she is currently receiving medical care while being supported by a ventilator.
