A Twitter account by the name of Nasreen Ebrahim, known for its pro-Congress stance and having over 5,000 followers, has posted a video showing a violent confrontation involving several individuals assaulting a man. The Twitter user while sharing the video wrote, “BJP bigwigs tried to visit Manipur. This is the reception that they received.” In the tweet, the account claims that prominent BJP leader made a visit to Manipur and were met with a hostile treatment from local residents, resulting in the violent altercation captured in the video.
In our research, we came across the same video uploaded by ABP Ananda on their YouTube channel. According to the video description, we found that the video is from the year 2017, when West Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghosh had gone to Darjeeling along with some leaders. During this, BJP leaders were attacked.
Furthermore, we conducted a keyword search on the incident “Attack on Dilip Ghosh in Darjeeling” and came across a report published by The Economic Times. According to the report, in 2017, Dilip Ghosh, who was the Bengal president of the BJP at the time, faced a physical altercation in Darjeeling.
The incident occurred when he was visiting Darjeeling to meet with leaders from the faction opposing Bimal Gurung within the Gorkhaland Janmukti Morcha. Ghosh’s purpose for the visit was to conduct a Vijaya Sammilani program. During his visit, he was confronted and assaulted by a group of individuals purportedly aligned with the faction led by Benoy Tamang.
Thus, based on the aforementioned facts, the assertion regarding BJP leaders visit to Manipur and subsequent assault is misleading. The video originates from 2017 and pertains to an event that unfolded in Darjeeling, Bengal.
