Unrelated Videos Misleadingly Shared as BJP Workers Setting Fire to Mamata Banerjee’s Residence
Amid the ongoing tension over the West Bengal Assembly election results, various videos of arson are being shared with claims that BJP workers, with support from the CRPF, attacked and set Mamata Banerjee’s residence on fire.
Sharing the videos, the Pakistani handle Anushi Tiwari Proud wrote, “BIG BREAKING: With alleged support from #CRPF, individuals linked to BJP workers set fire to Mamata Banerjee’s house and a TMC office. There are also reports of an attack on @MamataOfficial. @AITCofficial TMC workers, shut down #Kolkata today. It’s a matter of honor.”
Another handle Divya Yadav, asserted, “BIG BREAKING With alleged support from #CRPF, individuals linked to BJP workers set fire to Mamata Banerjee’s house and a TMC office. There are also reports of an attack on @MamataOfficial @AITCofficial TMC workers, shut down #Kolkata today. It’s a matter of honor.”

In our fact-check research, we extracted key frames from the first video and performed a reverse image search. This led us to a report by News18 dated January 16, 2026, in which we found the same visual of the house being set on fire. According to the report, the video is from Sylhet district in Bangladesh and shows house of Hindu teacher named Birendra Kumar Dey, being set on fire during violence against minorities. The clip is unrelated to West Bengal.
For the second video, a reverse image search traced it back to a post on the Times Now X handle dated May 4, 2026. The caption indicates that the footage is from Jamurai, where a TMC party office was set on fire amid tensions during the ongoing election results.
The reverse image of the third clip led us to the same video shared on the official ANI handle dated May 4, 2026. According to caption, the video is from Dinhata in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal and shows a clash between BJP and TMC workers during Assembly election vote counting, with central forces deployed at the scene.
Both videos are from ongoing clashes between TMC and BJP workers in West Bengal; however, there is no evidence to suggest that Mamata Banerjee or her residence was targeted.
In conclusion, the claim that BJP-linked individuals set fire to Mamata Banerjee’s residence is false. The videos being circulated are misleading and taken out of context. In reality, the first video is from Bangladesh and is unrelated to the West Bengal elections, while the other videos show clashes between BJP and TMC workers amid election results. No credible reports have confirmed any attack on Mamata Banerjee’s residence.
