Uncovering the Truth: The Gulfisha Fatima Case and the Attempted Whitewashing of Criminal Charges

In recent times, there has been a rising trend of attempts to whitewash the criminal image and records of certain individuals. This phenomenon involves the manipulation of information and the use of PR tactics to present a more favorable image of those with a criminal past. Moreover, recently, there has been a similar attempt by many left-leaning media outlets and organizations to whitewash the criminal image and records of Gulfisha Fatima.

On April 17, 2023, the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), an organization known for its anti-India and Hinduphobic stance, posted a propaganda video on its Twitter handle. In the video, they portrayed Gulfisha Fatima, a woman who has been jailed for three years under charges of inciting violence during the Delhi riots of 2020, as an innocent victim of state-sponsored oppression. Besides, the video was accompanied by a caption that read, “Three years and counting, prisoner of conscience Gulfisha Fatima jailed under bogus charges awaits justice.”

Another voice joined the chorus of those protesting the imprisonment of Gulfisha Fatima. The anti-Hindu Twitter handle, Gabbar, shared a photo of Fatima and lamented the three years she has spent behind bars. According to the post, Fatima is a Muslim MBA graduate and aspiring teacher who has been imprisoned under what they claim are unjust charges.

Apart from this, another Anti India and Hinduphobic media outlet Maktoob shared a video of Gulfisha Fatima’s father, in which he claims that his daughter is innocent. Moreover, the video was accompanied by a caption that reads, “Gulfisha Fatima, a Muslim activist from Seelampur in Northeast Delhi, on 9 April 2023, completed three years in jail in connection with Delhi pogrom cases under draconian UAPA.”

So, is it true that Gulfisha Fatima is innocent and just a victim of state-sponsored oppression? Let’s Fact Check.

Fact Check

One of the primary arguments made by supporters of Gulfisha Fatima is that she has been unfairly denied bail despite being innocent. However, as with any case, there are two sides to the story. In our fact-check research, we began by looking for the official bail rejection order copy from the court. After some digging, we finally came across a copy of the order on Livelaw. The order sheds light on the reasons why Gulfisha Fatima was denied bail by the court, providing a crucial piece of evidence in the case.

The charges against Gulfisha Fatima are serious, and they paint a very different picture from the one being promoted by her supporters. According to the Special Public Prosecutor in the case:-

  • Gulfisha was not just present during the protests that led up to the riots in Seelampur and Jafrabad, but was actively guiding them.

  • Witnesses have also testified that she was the one who started the blockade and prompted attacks on police and others with weapons like dande, lal-mirchi powder, and more in the Jafrabad area. These actions, according to the prosecution, had a cascading effect that ultimately led to the riots.
  • Gulfisha was also accused of receiving women protesters at Seelampur and Jafrabad, who were coming from Jahangir Puri, as part of a larger conspiracy to initiate violence.

Statements of the Protected Witnesses

Startling revelations have emerged from one of the protected witnesses in the Gulfisha Fatima case. According to the witness, who goes by the name ‘ECHO‘, Gulfisha, along with her friends Devangana and Proma Roy, were protesting near the Central Bank in Seelampur. Shockingly, Gulfisha is said to have instructed women to bring their children along, so that police would be hesitant to take action against them. If the police did take action, she allegedly believed that the presence of children would elicit sympathy.

Explosive details have emerged from another witness in the Gulfisha Fatima case. Going by the name ‘Smith‘, the witness claims that Gulfisha, along with Devangana and Natasha, was actively instructing women to gather weapons like glass bottles, acid, stones, and knives. Even more alarming is Smith’s testimony that on February 23, 2020, he witnessed Gulfisha, Devangana, and Natasha, along with several other women, block the road at the Jafrabad metro station and incite an attack on police officials.

Apart from this, another protected witness, named Helium, also made some startling revelations about Gulfisha Fatima and her associates. According to Helium, Gulfisha, along with Devangana and Natasha, was distributing stones, broken glass, and even mirchi powder to burqa-clad women. They were allegedly instigating these women to throw these items at those who were peacefully protesting in favour of CAA/NRC.

Thus, despite the widespread propaganda by certain media outlets and organizations claiming Gulfisha Fatima’s innocence, the court’s decision to deny her bail is backed by strong evidence and witness statements. The court concluded that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the allegations against Gulfisha are prima facie true.

Besides, all these highlights show the dangerous mentality of these individuals who were willing to go to any lengths to achieve their agenda. Thus, justice must be served based on evidence and facts, and not on propaganda and false narratives.
