No, the Muslim couple was not assaulted by a mob from the Hindu community

On 9 December 2022, Ibrahim Hooper from the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) tweeted that a Muslim mob who had gone to watch the Kannada language movie Kantara was assaulted by a mob. However, he even mentioned slurs like Islamophobia in India, Hindutva, and bjp fails in India, in his tweet as if he was trying to convey that the mob who assaulted the Muslim couple was from the Hindu community.

So, is it true that the mob who assaulted the Muslim couple who had gone to watch the Kantara movie was from the Hindu community? Let’s Fact Check.

In our research, using the keyword search  “Muslim couple assaulted by a mob for watching Kantara movie”, we came across a report by News18. As per the report, a Muslim couple, Muhammad Imtiyaz, and his 18-year-old girlfriend who came to watch the Kantara movie at a theatre were assaulted by a group of Muslim youth and not Hindus.

The whole incident took place in the Sulliya town of Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka. As per the report, The couple on Wednesday was waiting to watch the Kantara movie when they were attacked. According to the couple, a group of youths came to them and warned them against watching the movie and when the couple insisted, they were physically assaulted by them.

However, Mohammed Imtiyaz and his girlfriend later filed a complaint with Sullia Police and named the persons who assaulted them. Moreover, the accused have also been identified as Abdul Hameed, Ashraf, Sadique, Jabeer Jattipalla, and Siddique Borugudde. According to the couple, the accused also threatened them with life. The Sullia Police have registered a case and are investigating.

So, it is clear that the Muslim couple was assaulted by a mob of Muslim youth and not by Hindus.
