No, the Amritsar-Jamnagar Economic Corridor project was not started and implemented by former PM, Manmohan Singh

A video of the NH-754 Amritsar-Jamnagar Economic Corridor was tweeted by News 18 senior editor. The 1,257 kilometer long project, which is now under development, would lower the distance between Jamnagar and Amritsar from 1,430 km to 1,256 km and the travel duration between the two cities from 26 to 13 hours.

Rachit Seth, the founder of Policy Briefcase, cited the tweet to claim that Dr Manmohan Singh, a former Indian prime minister, started and implemented the project of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway. In addition, he provided the infographic as alleged proof, which shows the Chennai-Bengaluru, Bengaluru-Mumbai, Amritsar-Kolkata, and Delhi-Mumbai Corridors were built by the UPA government. But it had no mention of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Corridor.

Fact Check

Since, the infographic provided by Rachit Seth had no mention of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway, we did the keyword search on google like “which government proposed the Amritsar-Jamanagar Expressway project,” or “Amritsar-Jamnagar Corridor project was started by Manmohan Singh” and came across many media reports.

According to the news18 article, the expressway, which is being built at the cost of Rs 11,125 crore, is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase 1 programme.

Moreover, we found that Nitin Gadkari had launched the Bharatmala Pariyojana programme, an ecosystem of road development that entails the construction of tunnels, bridges, elevated corridors, flyovers, overpasses, interchanges, bypasses, ring roads, etc. According to Wikipedia, the Central government established this programme in 2015.

Besides, as per the information available on Ministry of Road Transport and Highway, an the Wikipedia page, the phase 1 of the project identified 44 corridors totaling 26,200 km (16,300 mi), of which 9,000 km (5,600 km) will be travelled. Amritsar-Jamnagar is one of the 44 corridors that make up Phase 1 of the project. The phase 2 will begin in 2024, which will cover 48,877 km.

Now, regarding the claim that construction on the Amritsar-Jamnagar corridor began during the tenure of Manmohan Singh, the NHAI website reveals that the plan to build 34,800 km of national highway corridors connecting more than 580 districts of the country was envisioned in the year 2017. If the plan was envisioned in 2017, how did Manmohan Singh started and implemented the project?

In addition, we came across the press release on the PIB website. According to the information provided, work on the Amritsar-Jamnagar corridor began in 2021–2022, and it is anticipated that it would be finished in 2025.

Hence, considering the aspects of the aforementioned facts and information, Rachit Seth’s claim is misleading. During the BJP’s tenure, the Amritsar-Jamnagar corridor project was initiated and put into action. The Amritsar linked corridor project which Manmohan Singh implemented in 2012 was Amritsar Kolkata industrial corridor.
