Ashok Swain, an anti-Hindu bigot and brand ambassador of the fake news factory, recently claimed in a tweet that girls learning in tribal schools in Tamil Nadu opposed the dress code of school. They flung their dupatta in protest against the school dress code, which they believe is North Indian and patriarchal.

Not only that, a YouTube channel named Hyderabad Deccan News sharing the video of girls throwing their dupattas made the same claim.

Is it true that the female students are throwing off their dupatta as a part of protest against school dress code? Lets find the truth.

In the first step of our research, we did a reverse image search of the video posted by HDN, pulling crucial frames from the video. We came across a report by One India Tamil. After translating the article from Tamil to English, we found the video is from government boarding school in the Kalvarayan hill region of the Kallakurichi district.

Furthermore, according to the report, the Tamil Nadu School Education department is launching a new initiative to provide guidance to government school students as they go to college. Hence, the writer of the book Dupatta Podunga Doshi, Geetha Ilangovan, was invited to address the students. “Dupatta Podunga Doshi” is a book about enslavement of women and sexism.

Besides, to show their affection and respect for the writer, the female students flung their dupattas in excitement. The video was captured and is now widely shared on social media with fake claims. So, the one of the claim that the students in the video are protesting believing the dress code is North Indian is obsoletely baseless and is being share to give rise to regionalism.

Geeta Ilangovan has also shared the video on her personal Instagram account. Moreover, she wrote, “Kalvarayan Hill’s Avalathikaram program celebrating the daughter of Aware India 2020. The reception given to me today by our young comrades who threw off their dupattas was an unforgettable experience.”

Moreover, the video was also shared by another author Nivedita Louis on her Facebook account who went to address the students. While sharing the video, she wrote, “Yesterday when I spoke to Kalvarayanmalai chellans, they talked a lot about the book “Dupatta Podunga Doshi“. We discussed body politics like chastity, womb, love in detail. Geetha is coming today and can welcome him by throwing off her dupatta.”

Hence, considering the evidences provided above, it is clear that Ashok Swain, as usual, is lying and spreading fake information. Female students were not protesting against the school dress code because they believed it was North Indian and patriarchal. Thus, they flung their dupattas in honour of the author of the book Dupatta Podunga Doshi.
