No, PM Modi Was Not Bowing Down before Gautam Adani’s Wife but before the Mayor of Tumkur

In recent days, a picture has gone viral on social media, capturing the attention of many. The image portrays Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a humble gesture, bowing down before a woman as a sign of respect. However, on June 13, 2023, a member of the Samajwadi Party named Santosh Kumar Yadav made a claim on Twitter regarding the identity of the woman, stating that she is Gautam Adani’s wife and that PM Modi is bowing down before Gautam Adani’s wife.

Apart from this, Twitter users named Rishi Dunak and PR Chaudhary also made the same claims.

So, is it true that PM Modi bowed before Gautam Adani’s Wife? Let’s Fact Check.

Fact Check

During our investigation, we first decided to conduct a reverse image search to determine the authenticity and origins of the viral picture. To our surprise, we stumbled upon a Reddit post dated September 25, 2014, which featured the same photograph. The caption accompanying the post stated that the image captured Prime Minister Modi greeting the mayor of Tumkur, shortly after leaving ISRO to launch a food park. This revelation raises intriguing questions about the true identity of the woman in the picture and casts doubt on the claim made by Santosh Kumar Yadav regarding her being Gautam Adani’s wife.

After this, we stumbled upon a report from Navbharat Times, published on April 10, 2023. The report featured the same viral picture of Prime Minister Modi bowing down to greet a woman. However, according to this report, the woman in question has no connection to Gautam Adani but rather hails from the city of Tumkur in Karnataka. The report identified her as Geeta Rudresh, the former mayor of Tumkur.

According to the Navbharat Times report, back in September 2014, Prime Minister Modi had visited Tumkur to inaugurate a food park. It was during this visit that he was warmly received by Geeta Rudresh, the mayor of the city at the time.

Continuing our investigation, we decided to delve into the realm of social media and conducted a keyword search on Twitter using the terms “PM Modi greets Tumkur Mayor.” Our efforts paid off when we stumbled upon a tweet by a Twitter user named Kush, dated September 25, 2014. The tweet featured an attached newspaper article and, to our surprise, showcased the very same viral picture we had been examining.

The caption of the tweet read, “PM Modi greets Tumkur Mayor Ms. Geetha Rudresh.” The accompanying newspaper article provided additional confirmation that the woman in the viral picture was indeed Geetha Rudresh, the Mayor of Tumkur.

So, all these points prove that the viral picture does not depict Prime Minister Modi bowing down before Gautam Adani’s wife, as claimed by SP member Santosh Kumar Yadav. Instead, it provides compelling support for the assertion that the woman in question is Geeta Rudresh, the former Mayor of Tumkur. The photograph captures a moment of respect and courtesy exhibited by Prime Minister Modi towards Geeta Rudresh during his visit to Tumkur in September 2014 to inaugurate a food park.
