Since April 18th, social media channels, particularly X (formerly known as Twitter), have been abuzz with the findings of the latest ‘Axis My India’ opinion poll. The results paint a picture of a closely contested electoral battle, offering a glimmer of hope to the opposition coalition, known as the INDI alliance. According to the poll conducted by Axis My India, it is projected that the ruling NDA (National Democratic Alliance) is poised to secure between 243 to 254 seats. In contrast, the INDI alliance is anticipated to attain a range of 232 to 242 seats. The poll further suggests that the NDA is expected to secure a vote share of 44 percent, while the INDI alliance trails closely with 43 percent. Notably, the poll predicts a scenario where the BJP, on its own, might fall short of achieving a majority, with estimated seat counts ranging from 208 to 219. Conversely, the Congress party, amidst a streak of disappointing electoral performances, is predicted to witness a modest increase in its seat tally, ranging from 115 to 123 seats.
The ‘Axis My India’ opinion poll findings were disseminated widely across prominent X handles, many of whom are known for advocating on behalf of the opposition parties.
India Alliance posted on X, ‘ Axis My India head Pradeep Gupta deleted his own tweet making predictions that BJP is losing massively in the elections! Now his final opinion poll on the basis of which he said that has LEAKED – showing about 242 for INDIA and 257 for NDA, with 116 for INC and 212 for BJP. In recent weeks, our investigation has uncovered numerous fabricated survey reports and opinion polls aimed at bolstering the morale of the INDI alliance. With this in mind, we scrutinized the ‘Axis My India’ X handle. However, in a press release shared by Axis My India, the organization unequivocally discredited the assertions made in the alleged opinion poll.
The press release reads, “With regards to the upcoming 2024 Indian General Elections, certain opinion polls are being published using the name of Mr. Pradeep Gupta, Axis My India, since the past few days, which are completely false (misleading).
This is to inform you all that Axis My India never publishes any kind of pre-poll/opinion poll. We will publish exit polls only after the elections as per ECI guidelines, on June 1 at 6.30pm.”
The press release was also translated into Hindi.
Additionally, our investigation extended to the X handle of Pradeep Gupta, who serves as the chairman and managing director of Axis My India. Gupta echoed the sentiments expressed in the previously issued press release, reaffirming its contents with the caption, “Reiterating the Press Release shared earlier.”
Furthermore, our investigation revealed a key aspect regarding Axis My India’s practices: the organization does not typically release pre-poll or opinion polls. This detail emerged from an interview with Pradeep Gupta, published by The Print on May 19, 2019. Gupta said, “As news channels counted the “poll of polls” two days before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections began on 11 April, Axis was missing. It had stopped doing pre-poll seat forecasts two years ago, following assembly elections in five states — UP, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa — in February and March 2017. Axis only does exit polls now.”
Therefore, it is reiterated that following the 2017 assembly elections in five states, Axis My India ceased its practice of conducting pre-polls or opinion polls.
In summary, the widely circulated opinion poll attributed to Axis My India has been debunked as fraudulent. Both Axis My India and its chairman and managing director, Pradeep Gupta, have confirmed that the organization does not engage in opinion polling. The dissemination of this false opinion poll appears to have been orchestrated with the intent to demoralize the Bharatiya Janata Party and its staunch supporters, while simultaneously spreading misinformation to the public.
