On 24th July 2022, an official Twitter handle of Indian National Congress shared an infographic where they claimed that the foundation of AIIMS was laid by Former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and 5% GST is levied on every private ward of AIIMS.

While exploring the matter, our research established that the foundation of AIIMS was laid by then Health Minister Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. On February 18, 1956, the then Minister of Health, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, introduced a new bill in the Lok Sabha. She wanted the foundation of AIIMS for post-graduate study and the maintenance of high standards of medical education in the country.
Our research also discovered that in 2010, then Congress-ruled state Andhra Pradesh levied a 4% VAT on hospital equipment.
In 2011 Congress ruled state Mizoram imposed VAT on medical equipment and medical devices by 5.5%, medical oxygen and bandage was also included in this tax bracket.
In the 47th meeting of the GST council held in Chandigarh on 29th June 2022, 5% GST was levied without ITC on hospital room rent (excluding ICU) exceeding room charge Rs.5000 on the recommendations by the GoM on Rate Rationalism. Finance Ministers from states and territories, as well as senior officers from finance ministries, were part of it.
Hence, the claim made by official Twitter handle of Indian National Congress is misleading.
