On August 17, 2022 Prabhat Khabar, a Hindi news publication, published a news story stating that the administration has been surrounded by Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav. Akhilesh Yadav taking a jibe at the government, made a tweet saying that the BJP government has only mandated full rail fares for children under the age of one and has spared pregnant women by charging extra for rail fares.
The Twitter handle of Congress and Standup comedian Rajeev Nigam also made a tweet slamming BJP government.

On conducting primary google search, we found the aforementioned tweets and media story suspicious. Our team proceeded to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the actual facts.
As per the report of Zee News, children under the age of five do not require reservations; nevertheless, if a berth is allotted in their name, just the entire berth ticket fee will be charged in accordance with Circular number 12 of 2020 released on 06.03.2020. Additionally, it is claimed in the same study that these changes are not new.
According to the circular number 12 of 2020 issued by the Ministry of Railways, ticket of children below 5 years of age will be chargeable only if the full berth reservation is made under their name, otherwise, a child’s rail ticket under the group of 5 year olds without a reservation is not chargeable.
