Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by conducting a reverse image search of the viral video. This led us to a Facebook post dated September 12, 2024, which read: “Pope Francis welcomes a historic visit to Timor-Leste, a country with 100% Catholic roots.”

Additionally, we found a news report from Reuters stating that approximately 600,000 people, nearly half the population of Timor-Leste, gathered in the heat to attend a Mass led by Pope Francis. The event took place at a coastal park in Dili, the capital, which holds historical significance for the country’s independence struggle against Indonesia.

Further, we conducted a detailed comparison between the visuals in the viral video and official footage from Reuters. The analysis confirmed that the visuals in the viral video matched the Reuters footage accurately, indicating they are from the same event and not manipulated.

The article further noted that the gathering included families with young children, many of whom arrived as early as 1 a.m. and endured temperatures of up to 32°C (90°F) to participate. Timor-Leste, a former Portuguese colony with a population of 1.3 million, is one of only two predominantly Catholic nations in Asia.

Moreover, no recent reports were found of a massive rally organized by Muslims in Mumbai.

Conclusion: The video has no connection to Mumbai or Muslims. It was recorded in Timor-Leste during Pope Francis’s visit in September 2024, where large crowds gathered to welcome him in the Christian-majority nation.
