We began our fact-checking process by conducting a reverse image search of the video, which led us to a YouTube video shared by Reuters. On July 22, 2024, Reuters posted the video with the description: “Russia’s Tuapse oil refinery, the largest on the Black Sea, was damaged in a significant Ukrainian drone attack overnight, sparking a fire. Russian officials said on Monday (July 22) that the extent of the damage was not immediately clear.”
Additionally, we found a report from Ukrainian media outlet The Kyiv Independent, stating: “An oil refinery in the Russian town of Tuapse, on the Black Sea coast, caught fire after over 75 drones targeted multiple Russian regions overnight on July 22, according to local authorities. A source within Ukraine’s military intelligence service (HUR) confirmed to The Kyiv Independent that the strike was carried out by Ukraine’s military intelligence.”
The Kyiv Independent further reported that the Russian Defense Ministry claimed its forces intercepted eight drones over Krasnodar Krai, 47 drones over Rostov Oblast, and several more over other regions and seas. Local official Sergey Boyko reported that debris from the drones targeting Krasnodar Krai fell on the Tuapse oil refinery, causing damage and a fire, which was later extinguished.
Moreover, The Moscow Times corroborated the reports from Reuters and The Kyiv Independent.
