Viral Claim That PM Modi Was Snubbed at G7 Summit Photo Is Misleading

The 2025 G7 Summit is taking place in Alberta, Canada, from June 15 to 17. As in previous years, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attending the summit as the leader of a guest nation, since India is not a G7 member. Amid this, a video is circulating showing G7 leaders posing for a group photo, with PM Modi not being present in the frame. The video is being shared with claims that the G7 countries deliberately ignored or snubbed PM Modi during the photoshoot.

Vikram wrote, ‘Where is our PM. He had gone right here. How did the cameramen miss this opportunity.’

Sheetal Yadav stated, ‘Modi ji is missing from this video of G7 Summit although he was supposed to join these 9 leaders.’

Congress leader Surendra Rajput claimed, ‘Where is Modi ji in the video of G7 Summit? There are 9 people in this video. If anyone sees Shri Narendra Modi, please tell us!’

Surya Samajwadi, IP Singh, Nher_who, Prashant Kanojia, Ashwani Soni, Rebellious Dogra, Netaflix, Aninsita, Tarun Gautam, Roshan Rai, Arpit Sharma and Manish RJ shared a similar claim.

Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by closely examining the viral video and photo. During our investigation, we came across the official G7 Canada website, where the image in question is listed as the official “G7 Leaders’ Family Photo.” The photo features nine individuals—seven of whom are heads of G7 member states: Donald Trump (USA), Mark Carney (Canada), Giorgia Meloni (Italy), Emmanuel Macron (France), Keir Starmer (United Kingdom), Friedrich Merz (Germany), and Shigeru Ishiba (Japan). The remaining two are representatives of the European Union: Antonio Costa from the European Council and Ursula von der Leyen from the European Commission.

According to the official European Union website, the EU is a full-fledged member of the G7. It is represented at the summit by the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council.

Therefore, the viral image being circulated shows only the G7 member countries and EU representatives, who are officially part of the G7. Since India is not a G7 member, there is no reason to expect Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appear in that specific group photo.

Furthermore, a report published by The Economic Times on June 15, 2025, confirms that along with India, Ukraine, Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea were invited to the summit as guest nations. However, we could not find any group photo that includes the heads of state of guest nations posing with G7 leaders.

To add more context, we also reviewed images from the 2024 G7 Summit held in Italy. In the official leaders’ photo that year, only the heads of G7 countries: Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni, the UK’s then-PM Rishi Sunak, France’s President Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Japan’s then-PM Fumio Kishida, US President Joe Biden, Canada’s then-PM Justin Trudeau along with Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel from the EU were seen.

Additionally, there was a separate group photo taken later that included both G7 leaders and heads of guest nations.

Therefore, the absence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the viral photo is because that particular picture was taken exclusively for G7 members and EU representatives. It is a longstanding tradition at G7 summits to have two group photos: one of the core G7 members and another including invited guest countries.
