Fact Check
To investigate the viral claim, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords. We found an interview of BJP leader Nitin Gadkari, aired on ABP News YouTube channel on February 2, 2018. About 31 minutes into the interview, the interviewer questions Nitin Gadkari regarding the newspaper clipping.
The interviewer says, “This is a newspaper clipping that has gone viral on social media. It claims that after Modi becomes Prime Minister, there will be no need to pay income tax. The clipping mentions your name, stating that the responsibility for drafting this plan was given to former BJP President and Vision Document Chairman for the Lok Sabha elections, Nitin Gadkari.”
In response, Nitin Gadkari says, “Do you trust me or the person who sent this news? This news is 100% false. We have never said this, nor have we given any such assurance, nor have I ever made such a statement publicly. One thing is clear: when I was the president, there was a team from Pune that included a large group, including Manohar Parrikar, myself, and several others. At times, we even represented Baba Ramdev. He used to suggest various measures regarding black economy and income tax, which were discussed on different forums. At that time, we were not even in power. We never gave any assurance. If such a claim exists, prove it. We never made any announcement. This is entirely baseless.”
During the investigation, the BJP’s 2014 manifesto was reviewed, which does not mention the claims made in the newspaper clipping.
Conclusion: The investigation clearly shows that the claims made in the newspaper clipping are unfounded. Neither Nitin Gadkari nor the Bharatiya Janata Party has ever promised to abolish income tax once in power.
