Viral Claim That Iran Arrested 73 Indians for Spying Is False

An image is going viral on social media showing an armed man holding another man at gunpoint and forcing him to the ground. It is being shared with the claim that 73 Indians have been arrested by Iran for spying on behalf of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency.

Karishma Aziz claimed, ‘73 Indians arrested in Iran on charges of spying for Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency.’

Minal Sultan wrote, ‘73 Indian Hindus arrested in Iran on charges of spying for Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency…Iran announces it will tie all the spies to missiles and send them to Israel!‘

Live TV stated, ‘73 Indians arrested in Iran for spying for Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad.’

Anwar Muloor and Israil Qureshi also shared a similar claim.

We began our fact-checking process by conducting a reverse image search. The image was found to have been uploaded on Wikimedia Commons in March 2023, with the caption: “Maritime Security Belt drill by Iran, China, and Russia in the northern Indian Ocean.”
