Viral Claim About Toll Tax on Two-Wheelers on National Highways Is Fake

On Thursday morning, both mainstream media and social media platforms began circulating a news report claiming that, starting 15 July 2025, toll tax would be imposed on two-wheelers using national highways. The report sparked public outrage, with many condemning the alleged move as extortion and a form of tax terrorism by the government.

Congress wrote,’ Modi government means extortion government Narendra Modi has brought a new plan to rob the public’s pockets. Now, even bikers will face forced toll tax collection. • You went on the road with a bike • If a toll tax comes, you’ll be stopped • First, the collection will happen • Then you’ll be allowed to proceed If you hesitate to pay the toll tax, a fine of 2,000 rupees will also be imposed. For this new plan, a ‘Thank You’ is certainly due.’

Zakir Ali Tyagi claimed, ‘Congratulations countrymen, now two wheelers i.e. bikers will also have to pay toll tax from July 15! You deserve congratulations!’

Aam Aadmi Party stated, ‘Modi government broke all limits of tax collection. Modi government will now collect toll tax from two-wheelers as well. Now the day is not far when Modi government will levy tax even on breathing. Modi government is running tax terrorism in the country. Heavy taxes are being levied on all basic necessities and facilities including education and health. This tax money is not used to provide facilities to the public but to waive off the loans of Modi ji’s close friends.’

Sandeep Singh wrote, ‘Big blow to the country, toll on two wheelers. Fellow countrymen…get ready for another gift from the Vishwaguru! This time the middle class and the poor are the direct targets of the Modi government. Now two-wheelers will have to pay toll tax on national highways. The government plans to implement this masterstroke from July 15.’

Jairam Ramesh, Supriya Shrinate, Karnataka Congress, Saurabh Yadav, Tanmoy, Krishna Kant, Pappu Yadav, TV9 Bharatvarsh, IBC 24, One India, Amanpreet Singh, Durgesh Pathak, Ritu Chaudhary, Yasar Shah, and Amock made a similar claim.

Our investigation revealed that Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has categorically denied the claim. In a post on X, Gadkari stated, “Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing toll tax on two-wheelers. No such decision is proposed. Complete exemption on toll for two-wheelers will continue. Creating sensation by spreading misleading news without knowing the truth is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn this.”

In addition, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) also dismissed the viral claim as false. In its X post, NHAI wrote: “Some sections of the media have reported that the Government of India plans to levy user fees on two-wheelers. NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers.”
