Viral AI-Generated Image Sparks Misinformation: False Claim of Tents for Israelis Displaced in War in Eilat

On social media, an image of multiple blue and white tents set up along a beach, some of which bear the Star of David, has gone viral. Many X (formerly known as Twitter) users have posted this image, claiming that it shows a tent camp in Israel’s Eilat built up by the Israeli government to house displaced citizens.

The X user (Archived link) who is an AIMIM supporter and a Islamist propagandist, shared the image and wrote, “The Isreli govt is proposing to making a temporary Tent City near the city of Eilat, on the Red Sea, to house displaced settlers, specifically for the settlers of Ghaf Ghaf. Over 400,000 Settlers have been displaced due to the recent conflict.”

The image with the same claim was also shared by many users on the X platform. (Archived links 1, 2, 3, and 4)

Fact Check

In the first step of our research, we used the Dupli checker tool to perform a reverse image search for this specific image. No reputable and credible news outlets reporting the war appear to have published this photo showing tents built up for displaced Israelis.

Next, after thorough inspection, we identified various abnormalities in the viral image. To begin with, unlike the Israeli flag, the flag in the image’s upper-right corner has two hastily and badly drawn Stars of David instead of one. Second, several of the people in this image are disproportionately shaped. For example, at least two of them have different sized legs, or their arm width is not proportionate to the size of their legs and torso.

Next, we noted that, despite the fact that the weather in Israel was bright and warm, particularly in Eilat, where some say the photo was taken, most people looked to be dressed warmly. We also investigated the day temperature in Eilat for the previous few days, which revealed that the weather is fairly warm and moderately hot.

Furthermore, unlike conventional shots, the whole image appears very smooth. All of this suggested that the picture might have been generated artificially.

So, using an AI image detection took like Huggingface, we found that the image was most likely made by AI. It was generated using generative artificial intelligence (AI). Generative AI is a sort of AI system that can produce or create new material, such as false photographs. The picture does not depict a real tent city encampment in Gaza or Israel.

Hence, this image does not show a tent camp put up by the Israeli government near Eilat for Israelis displaced by the war.
