Video Showing Actress Kajol Changing Her Outfit On Camera Is Deepfake

Following the uproar over a deepfake of star Rashmika Mandanna, another video claiming to show Kajol Devgan was caught on camera changing her outfit is making the rounds on social media.

This morphed video of Kajol is rapidly circulating on Facebook and the X platform (formerly known as Twitter), amassing thousands of views.

Deepfakes are artificial intelligence (AI) produced by digital software, face-swapping techniques, and machine learning. They produce fake photos, movies, and audios. The spread of these manipulations results in the production of explicit content and false information, which poses a serious threat to society. Deepfake videos of actresses doing obscene actions, such as Rashmika Mandanna, Kiara Advani, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Kajol, and others, have been widely shared on social media in recent times.

Major social media platforms were advised by the Indian government to take immediate action against deepfakes and delete anything that spreads disinformation in the wake of the controversy surrounding Rashmika Mandanna’s deepfake video. The guidelines are in accordance with the rules specified in the IT Regulations 2021.

Fact check

Upon conducting a fact check, we discovered that the video had been altered to appear as though Kajol was in it. However, this original video was created by a social media influencer who was inspired by the “Get ready with me” social media trend. Nonetheless, since the deepfake contains non-consensual material, we have decided to keep the identity of the original creator confidential.

TikTok shared and posted the original video on June 5, 2023. We also noted that the influencer shared many of these videos on the platform as a part of the “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) trend. We captured a snapshot of the original video, which unequivocally shows that Kajol is not the woman in the video.

Social media users are embracing the “Get Ready with Me” (GRWM) trend, particularly on video-sharing websites like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Typically, the content producer records oneself doing steps like applying makeup, arranging their hair, and selecting an outfit in order to create a “Get Ready with Me” video. Videos titled “Get Ready with Me” can showcase a variety of topics, such as regular activities, unique events, or outfit themes. Social media groups that focus on fashion, beauty, and lifestyle have made them a popular type of content.
