A video is rapidly going viral on social media, showing visuals from abroad an Indigo flight where a passenger can be seen slapping another passenger wearing a skull cap, who is a Muslim. The cabin crew intervenes to help the Muslim passenger and says that the other passenger should not have raised his hand on him. Meanwhile, a fellow passenger questions the accused man, saying that everyone was having a problem, so why did he slap the man? To this, he replies that he was having a problem. As soon as this video went viral, this incident is being given a communal color on social media. It is being said that the person who slapped the Muslim passenger is a Hindu and he raised his hand on him because of victim’s religion.

Sharing the video, the handle Kavish Aziz wrote, “As soon as a beard and cap are seen, the hungry wolf wakes up. Recognize the face of this vile, hateful person. On an Indigo flight, a Muslim man fell ill, and this person slapped him. All the passengers asked him why he slapped the man, and his response was that the he had a problem.” (archived link)

Fact Check
In our fact check research, we searched keywords related to this incident on Google and found several media reports related to this matter featuring the same visuals from the viral video. According to a report by India Today, this incident took place on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kolkata. The Muslim passenger who was slapped is reported to be unwell and having panic attacks, and the air hostess was assisting him. During this, the another passenger frustrated slapped him, claiming he was causing inconvenience.
According to the Hindustan Times report, the victim’s is identified as Hossain Ahmed Majumdar who lives in Mumbai and works as a gym trainer. He was enroute to his hometown Katigorah, Kolkata, from Mumbai when this incident took place inside the aircraft. After this accident, he was reported missing but now according to an update, he has reached home.
Further, we found a post on IndiGo’s X handle where they have addressed the incident and condemned it. IndiGo stated that they do not support such unruly actions and mentioned that, in adherence to standard operating procedures, the accused passenger was handed over to the security authorities upon arrival.
We are aware of an incident involving a physical altercation on board one of our flights. Such unruly behaviour is completely unacceptable and we strongly condemn any actions that compromise the safety and dignity of our passengers and crew.

Furthermore, we found a tweet by The Hindu journalist Jagriti Chandra, in which she reported that the accused person has been handed over to law enforcement and further stated, and citing her airline sources, revealed that the victim and the accused belong to the same religious community. While following up, we came across a report from Dainik Bhaskar dated August 2, which stated that the accused person is Hafizul Rahman, who had slapped Hossain Ahmad Mazumdar. Rehman was detained in Kolkata but was later released.
In conclusion, the video of a passenger slapping his fellow passenger because he was unwell and causing inconvenience is indeed disturbing and uncalled for. But the incident was circulated with a false communal angle where it was alleged that the accused person is a Hindu and he slapped the victim because of his Muslim identity. However, this is not true. According to a recent revelation, both the accused and the victim belong to the same religion.
