No, the UP government has not abolished OBC reservation in Civic elections

On December 27, 2022, Author Ashok Kumar Pandey tweeted, “In Uttar Pradesh, the OBC community overwhelmingly voted for the BJP. In return, OBC reservation has been abolished in civic elections. The next number could be to end OBC reservations from education and jobs. But what happens, even if your pajama slips, but the mullahs are tight, aren’t they”? he added.

Apart from this Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav also claimed that BJP has always been against reservation for Dalits and backward classes and that BJP wants to abolish reservation for Dalits and OBCs. Besides, he even said that if BJP stays in power for long, they will take away all the rights from Dalits and OBCs given by Dr. B.R Ambedkar.

It is clear from the above claims that Ashok Kumar and Akhilesh Yadav are trying to convey with their statement that the UP BJP Government is responsible for abolishing OBC reservations in civic elections.

So, is it true that the UP BJP government has abolished OBC reservation in civic elections? Let’s Fact Check.

During our research, we came across a report by India Today. According to the report, Allahabad High Court has ordered conducting civic election without reservation for OBCs.

To know more about the matter, we found Allahabad High Court judgement on its official website, the order states that the bench quashed the draft notification issued by the Uttar Pradesh government on December 5 for the reservation of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the urban local body elections. It was the Allahabad High Court that ordered the UP government to conduct the urban local body elections in Uttar Pradesh without OBC reservation.

After Allahabad High court issued an order regarding OBC reservation, CM Yogi Adityanath on December 27, 2022, tweeted, “The Uttar Pradesh government will set up a commission in the perspective of urban body general elections and provide reservation facility to the citizens of Other Backward Classes (OBC) on the basis of triple test. Only after this, the urban body general elections will be conducted. If necessary, the State Government will also appeal in the Hon’ble Supreme Court after considering all the legal aspects regarding the decision of the Hon’ble High Court”, he added.

We also found official press release by the Information and Public Relations Department, Uttar Pradesh, showing CM Yogi’s take on the whole matter.

Hence, all these points prove that the claim made by Ashok Kumar Pandey that the UP government has abolished OBC reservation in civic elections is completely false. The reality is that the UP BJP government has always been in support of OBC reservation in civic elections.
